Chapter 2

Maya surged forward like a sprinter breaking the tape at the finish line, her gaze locked onto Jax with an intensity that could shatter glass. She slid to a halt right at the edge of the manicured lawn, her heavy boots kicking up a tiny spray of white gravel from the flower bed. Jax barely turned his head to acknowledge her arrival, his grip on Leo’s shirt collar remaining painfully tight. The boy’s breathing was shallow and erratic, his blue sneakers dangling mere inches above the perfectly trimmed Kentucky bluegrass.
Without a second of hesitation or a single wasted breath, Maya closed the final distance. She stepped directly into Jax’s personal space, forcing the larger man to shift his heavy weight backward to maintain his balance. Her chest brushed against his navy polo shirt as she glared up into his hardened, bearded face. Every muscle in her body was coiled tight, ready to spring. She wasn't just angry; she was operating on a pure, unfiltered maternal instinct that recognized an immediate, predatory threat to a child under her watch.
Jax’s lips parted as if to offer a cold, dismissive explanation, but no words came out. Instead, a flicker of genuine shock crossed his rugged features as he registered the sheer fury radiating from Maya’s posture. She didn't flinch, she didn't blink, and she certainly didn't back down. She held her ground with the unwavering resolve of a soldier standing her post against overwhelming odds.
“You put your hands on a child?” Maya’s voice cut through the afternoon air like a razor-sharp blade. It wasn't a question meant to invite dialogue; it was an indictment, delivered with controlled, devastating venom.

Before Jax could formulate a defensive response or loosen his iron grip on the boy’s collar, Maya’s right arm whipped upward from her side in a tight, compact arc. Her fist connected solidly with the side of Jax’s jaw with a dull, sickening thud. The impact sent a shockwave through the quiet suburban street. Jax staggered backward, his heavy frame losing its footing on the slick grass. The football slipped from his grasp, bouncing awkwardly onto the concrete sidewalk with a heavy, hollow thud.
Instantly, the situation devolved into a frantic struggle on the sunlit pavement. Jax went down hard, his knees scraping against the abrasive concrete, while Maya lunged forward to pin his shoulder, refusing to let him regain the tactical advantage. Leo scrambled backward on his hands and knees, clutching his bruised throat and gasping for deep, ragged breaths of fresh air.
