Chapter 6: The Voice on the Tape

*“If you are listening to this, Derek,”* Arthur’s recorded voice began, clear and remarkably calm, *“then my worst fears have manifested. Marcus has partnered with Apex Urban Holdings—a predatory real estate cartel laundering money through our family foundation.”*

The truck rumbled to life as Derek pulled onto the dark highway, wipers beating against the sheet of rain.

*“I confronted him last Tuesday,”* the recording continued. *“He offered me a settlement to bulldoze the Southside Children's Home and the Westside Clinic. When I refused, he threatened to ruin the family name. Do not let vengeance consume you, son. Protect the people who have no voice. The ledger in the lockbox contains Apex's wire transfers directly to Marcus’s private accounts in Grand Cayman.”*

Derek wiped rain and sweat from his forehead. The gravity of the situation was larger than a family feud; hundreds of vulnerable families and foster children depended on that clinic network. Marcus wasn't just stealing an inheritance—he was bulldozing a community's lifeline.

Derek dialed Angela’s number on speakerphone. “Angela, how is my father?”

“He’s awake and stable, Derek,” she replied, relief evident in her voice. “The hospital administration attempted to transfer him under Marcus’s orders, but the court injunction held. Where are you?”

“I have the proof,” Derek said. “Meet me at the harbor safehouse by dawn.”
