Chapter 1: The Resurrected Breath

The mahogany lid slammed against the marble balustrade with a hollow boom that shattered the cathedral’s sacred silence. Derek’s chest heaved, adrenaline surging through his veins as he peeled the silver tape from his father’s cracked lips.
Arthur Vance gasped—a violent, ragged inhalation that sounded like dry leaves scraping pavement. The room ignited into immediate chaos. Whispers cascaded through the mourners like wildfire. Sister Clara’s rosary beads slipped through her trembling fingers, clattering sharply against the cold flagstones.
“Dad, look at me,” Derek pleaded, his hands clamping onto Arthur’s frail shoulders. “You’re here. You’re awake.”
Arthur’s faded blue eyes flicked frantically toward the choir loft before fixing onto Derek. His fingers dug into Derek’s black lapels with surprising ferocity. “Derek... the house,” Arthur rasped, his voice raw and raspy. “Don't let them take the trust.”
Before Derek could respond, two men in tailored suits stepped forward from the back pews, flanking Marcus—Derek’s older stepbrother. Marcus wasn't crying. His face had hardened into stone.
“Step away from the casket, Derek,” Marcus said, his voice measured yet chillingly cold. “Our father suffered severe brain trauma. This is a medical emergency, not a miracle.”
“You declared him dead, Marcus!” Derek shouted, shielding the frail old man. “You ordered a closed-casket funeral within twenty-four hours!”

Sirens wailed in the distant city streets. The crowd parted as paramedics rushed down the center aisle, but Arthur kept his grip tight on Derek’s sleeve, whispering a final plea: “Trust no one in the family. Look behind the study wall.”
