Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Pen

The paper fluttered onto the bedsheets. Clara grabbed it, her eyes scanning the fabricated clinical report. High traces of synthetic opioids. Signed by Dr. Gregory Morris—the senior physician on Victoria’s family payroll.
"You framed me," Clara whispered, horror turning into a sharp, searing fury. "Victoria injected me in the hallway. That vial..."
"Allegations without evidence are considered slander," Nathan countered coldly. "Mr. Vance has settled your medical bills in full. In exchange, you will sign this non-disclosure agreement and surrender all parental rights. There is a cashier’s check for five hundred thousand dollars waiting at the front desk upon signature."
Clara looked from the legal document to Nathan’s sterile face. Five hundred thousand dollars to sell her flesh and blood. To erase her existence from her son's life so Victoria could play mother in her high-society penthouse.
Slowly, Clara pulled herself up onto the edge of the bed. Her body screamed with agony, but her spine remained stiff.
"Give me the pen," she said quietly.
Nathan smiled, a smug curve of practiced superiority. He unscrewed his golden fountain pen and placed it in her palm.
Clara gripped the heavy pen, hovered over the signature line, and then, with deliberate precision, snapped the metal barrel in half. Dark blue ink exploded across her palms, splashing onto Nathan’s crisp white shirt and the legal contract.
"Get out," Clara said, her voice dropping into a register that made Nathan’s smile vanish. "Tell Arthur that every breath I take from this second on belongs to the destruction of his name. I will take my son back."
Nathan wiped a smear of ink from his lapel, his eyes narrowing into venomous slits. "You have no money, no home, and no family left. You will die in the gutter before you ever see Vance Tower's lobby."

He slammed the door shut.
Left alone, Clara dropped to her knees, staring at her ink-stained hands. Through the glass window, she watched a dark Mercedes limousine roll away from the hospital gates, its tinted windows hiding the stolen heartbeat of her child.
