Chapter 12 - The Iron Fortress

Vance Tower pierced the stormy sky like an obsidian blade. Sixty stories of reflective glass and steel, standing as a monument to unchecked corporate power.
At 2:00 AM, the tower appeared sleeping, but Clara knew the digital pulse running through its veins never rested.
Marcus parked three blocks away in the blind spot of a decommissioned construction site. Clara stepped out into the biting drizzle, wearing a dark rain slicker, her injured shoulder bound tightly with medical tape. In her pocket, she carried the stolen executive key fob and a small EMP disrupter Marcus had pieced together from radio transmitters.
"The server room for the top ten floors is on fifty-eight," Marcus instructed over a handheld radio. "The penthouse is on sixty. If you hit the master breaker on fifty-eight, the biometric locks will default to mechanical override for ninety seconds before the diesel backups fire up. That’s your window."
"Ninety seconds," Clara repeated.
"If you get trapped in the penthouse when the backup generators kick in, the blast doors will seal automatically. You'll be locked in a steel box with Arthur Vance."
"Then Arthur will be locked in there with me," Clara said, clicking off the radio.
She slipped through the ventilation grates of the subterranean parking garage, avoiding the sweep of automated security cameras. She found the unmarked executive elevator, pressed Nathan’s key fob against the scanner, and watched the small LED light turn from amber to steady green.
The doors slid open with a soft hiss. Clara stepped inside and pressed the button for the fifty-eighth floor.
As the elevator surged upward at dizzying speed, the digital display climbed: 10... 20... 30... 40...
Suddenly, the car shuddered. The interior lights flickered and died, replaced by a harsh, crimson emergency glow. The elevator groaned to a halt at floor fifty-two.

Over the intercom speaker, Arthur Vance's voice echoed through the metal box:
"Did you honestly believe Nathan's driver could betray me without my consent, Clara? Welcome to the end of your run."
