Chapter 7

The word forfeiture hung in the sterile air, chilling Clara to the bone. She clutched the baby tighter, her knuckles turning white. The thought of bureaucrats and federal agents viewing her daughter not as a human being, but as biological property tied to a criminal enterprise, made her stomach churn with violent nausea. She looked at Eleanor, searching the older woman's face for any sign of a trap, any hidden angle designed to protect the Sterling legacy at the expense of the child. But she found only a bleak, shared terror.
"They wouldn't do that," Clara said, though her voice lacked conviction. "She's an infant. She was born in a legitimate hospital under my care."
"She was conceived through a compromised clinic currently under federal racketeering charges," Eleanor replied, her voice steadying as her analytical mind kicked back into gear. "Trust me, Clara, I know how the Department of Justice operates when high-net-worth individuals are involved in medical fraud. To them, every asset, every contract, and every surrogate or gestational product associated with Vanguard is subject to audit and impoundment until ownership is legally verified."
The nurse, overhearing the conversation from her station, slowly walked back over, her expression grave. "She’s right, Mrs. Sterling—er, Miss Vance," the nurse corrected herself quickly, realizing the dissolution of the married name. "When the HHS task force raided Vanguard, they seized digital servers containing over four thousand embryo transfer logs. Any child born from those batches is currently flagged in the national health database as part of an active federal inquiry."
Clara stared at the nurse in horror. "Flagged? My daughter is flagged by the federal government?"
"Standard protocol for high-risk fertility fraud cases," the nurse said apologetically. "It’s designed to prevent international abduction by parents trying to flee with mismatched infants. But it also means social services or federal marshals could walk through that door at any moment to verify the child's physical custody."
The reality of their situation crashed down with suffocating force. The hospital room, which had felt like a private sanctuary just moments ago, suddenly felt like a trap closing in from all sides. Clara looked down at the sleeping infant, whose tiny chest rose and fell in peaceful ignorance of the bureaucratic leviathan descending upon her.
"What do we do?" Clara asked, the defiance in her voice finally cracking, replaced by raw, desperate maternal instinct.
Eleanor didn't hesitate this time. The hesitation that had crippled her moments before was burned away by the immediate, existential threat to the child—regardless of whose DNA she carried. Eleanor reached out, resting her hand gently on the edge of the mattress, maintaining a respectful distance from Clara and the baby.
"We get you out of here," Eleanor said firmly. "Before the administrative flags convert into local sheriff warrants or federal social worker dispatches. My legal team has a private medical transport service on retainer for VIP discharges. We bypass the front lobby, we bypass the administrative desk, and we take you to my estate in upstate New York."
Clara recoiled slightly. "Your estate? Eleanor, are you insane? If I go with you, I'm walking right back into the lion's den. You expect me to trust you after everything your son put me through?"
"I don't expect you to trust me," Eleanor replied, her voice dropping into a tone of absolute, chilling pragmatism. "I expect you to recognize that my estate has private security gates, an independent medical wing, and a perimeter wall that keeps federal bureaucrats and reporters off the property until we can untangle this mess legally. If you walk out the front doors of this hospital right now, reporters tipped off by Vanguard’s leaked logs will tear you and this baby to pieces before you reach the parking lot."
Clara looked from Eleanor to the nurse, who gave a slow, solemn nod of confirmation. The media circus surrounding the Vanguard raid was already leaking into underground news channels; it was only a matter of hours before the mainstream press picked up the story of the elite fertility clinic's catastrophic mix-ups.

"How do I know you won't try to take her from me once we're behind your walls?" Clara asked, her eyes searching Eleanor’s face for any flicker of deceit.
Eleanor met her gaze without blinking. "Because, Clara, that child is the only piece of my son left in this world—and whether her DNA matches his or not, she is the only leverage we have left to ensure Thomas pays for what he did, instead of letting us take the fall for his crimes."
