Chapter 6

The distance between the hospital bed and Eleanor seemed to stretch across a canyon of broken trust. Eleanor’s feet felt heavy, each step requiring a deliberate act of will. She stopped a foot away from the bed, her hands clasped tightly in front of her to hide their persistent trembling. For the first time since Clara had entered the Sterling family, Eleanor looked vulnerable, stripped of the polished armor of wealth and social status that had always protected her from the messy realities of ordinary life.
Clara did not move away, but her body remained tense, a coiled spring ready to defend the infant against any residual manipulation. "Don't, Eleanor," Clara warned softly. "Whatever you're planning to say, whatever spin you're trying to put on this to salvage your pride, keep it to yourself. I'm not interested."
"I'm not here to spin anything," Eleanor said, her voice rough, stripped of its usual crisp modulation. She looked past Clara’s defensive posture, her eyes resting for a long, heavy moment on the sleeping infant. "I didn't know. You have to believe that, Clara. If I had known Thomas was playing with human lives for a payout, I would have cut him off years ago. I built my life on reputation, on structure... this is..." She swallowed hard, unable to finish the sentence.
"Your reputation is built on sand, Eleanor," Clara said without malice, just cold, hard fact. "Just like your son's character. You both spent decades believing that money could buy compliance, that you could curate a perfect bloodline without ever checking the foundation."
The nurse quietly retreated toward the corner of the room, recognizing that the dynamic had shifted from a medical confrontation to a private reckoning. She busied herself with adjusting the IV drip on an adjacent, empty station, keeping a watchful ear on the exchange.
Eleanor slowly raised her gaze from the baby back to Clara’s face. The arrogance that usually defined her expression was entirely gone, replaced by a hollow, haunting despair. "What happens now?" Eleanor asked, her voice barely a whisper. "If the federal investigators are tracking the Vanguard payouts, and Thomas has fled... where does that leave you? Where does that leave her?"
"It leaves us right here," Clara replied, her chin lifting defiantly. "I don't need Thomas, and I certainly don't need your money to raise my child. The moment I realized what was in that envelope, my priorities became very simple. I am going to protect her. I am going to find out whose child she actually is—not to hand her over to strangers, but so she knows the truth of her own history when she's old enough to understand it."
Eleanor flinched as if struck by a physical blow. "Find her biological parents? Clara, are you insane? If the Vanguard database is compromised, opening that Pandora's box could mean losing custody entirely. The courts—"
"The courts won't know what to do with a case this unprecedented," Clara interrupted fiercely. "And I don't care about the courts right now. I care about the truth. Thomas used this child as collateral in a financial crime. If I stay silent, if I pretend she’s Thomas’s daughter to protect your family name, I am no better than him."
Eleanor fell silent, digesting the brutal logic of Clara’s words. She realized with a sickening jolt that her son was likely gone for good, fleeing international jurisdiction before the federal indictments dropped. The Sterling name, which she had guarded with fanatical devotion for over forty years, was about to be dragged through the mud of a high-profile federal conspiracy. Yet, looking at Clara—a young woman she had previously dismissed as fragile and pliable—Eleanor saw an unexpected strength that commanded a begrudging, terrifying respect.
"You can't do this alone," Eleanor said quietly, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. "A federal investigation involving Vanguard is going to require legal representation, forensic accountants, and private security. You have none of those things."
May you like
"And you have too much of them," Clara countered sharply. "Your money and your lawyers are the reason Thomas felt invincible enough to pull this off in the first place."
Eleanor bowed her head, acknowledging the hit. "Perhaps. But right now, Clara, my resources are the only weapon we have to keep federal agencies from seizing this child as evidence in an ongoing criminal asset forfeiture."
