Chapter 2: The First Exchange

The referee, an older instructor with graying temples and a stoic demeanor, stepped forward to inspect the fighters. He gave a sharp nod, signaling the commencement of the first round. Jin stepped onto the center mat, shaking out his arms and rotating his neck. The confident smile had returned to his face, though it now carried a harder edge of caution. He knew that underestimating an unknown opponent was the fastest way to a career-ending defeat. Elena remained in her defensive stance, her weight balanced evenly over the balls of her feet. She did not bounce or posture; she simply existed in the space, a statue carved from unrelenting focus and quiet resolve.

Jin initiated the engagement with a swift, snapping low kick aimed at Elena’s lead thigh. The impact made a dull thud against her black pants, but Elena absorbed the blow with minimal lateral movement, her leg flexing just enough to dissipate the kinetic energy. Before Jin could retract his leg fully, Elena closed the distance with terrifying efficiency. She threw a straight right jab that clipped the edge of Jin’s jaw, snapping his head slightly to the side. The crowd gasped in unison. Jin’s eyes widened in surprise; he had expected a defensive retreat, not an immediate counter-offensive that challenged his striking range.

Recovering instantly, Jin unleashed a spinning back kick meant to catch Elena’s ribs. Elena ducked underneath the arc of the strike with a fraction of an inch to spare, the wind of the kick rushing over the top of her ponytail. As Jin spun past her, she drove a palm strike directly into his midsection, catching him precisely as he exhaled. The blow knocked the wind out of Jin, forcing a sharp gasp from his lungs. He stumbled forward, his hands dropping for a split second—a critical error that Elena immediately exploited. She swept her foot behind his ankle, leveraging his own forward momentum to send him crashing onto the canvas mats.

The gym erupted into chaotic noise. Shouts of disbelief and excitement bounced off the concrete walls. Jin rolled over instantly, pushing himself up to one knee with a sharp, ragged breath. He was breathing heavily now, the effortless aura of invincibility shattered by the reality of Elena’s technical precision. He looked up at her, wiping a stray drop of sweat from his forehead, his expression shifting from arrogance to a deep, begrudging respect. Elena extended a hand down toward him, her face devoid of gloating or malice. It was a gesture of pure athletic camaraderie, acknowledging the validity of his fighting spirit.

Jin stared at the outstretched hand for a long moment before taking it. Elena hauled him up with surprising core strength, letting him step back toward the edge of the mat to recover his stamina. The first round had lasted barely forty seconds, yet it felt like an eternity for the spectators who had expected a swift, one-sided annihilation. Elena stood her ground, rolling her shoulders to loosen the lactic acid building in her arms. She did not look tired, but her breathing was deeper now, measured and deliberate. She turned her gaze toward Marcus, who was already stepping forward to take his place on the mat for round two, the shock entirely gone from his heavy frame, replaced by a heavy, palpable dread.
