Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

Eleanor took the stairs two at a time, moving with a predator’s silent agility. She pushed Clara’s door open, expecting to find her daughter waking from a nightmare. Instead, Clara was kneeling on the floor beside the open window, the cold night air billowing the lace curtains into the room.

“Clara, get away from there,” Eleanor whispered urgently, crossing the room to grip her daughter’s trembling shoulders.

Clara’s eyes were wild, wide with a madness born of sheer terror. She clung to Eleanor’s cardigan with bruised fingers. “He’s outside, Mom. I saw the headlights. He knows I took it. He’s going to kill me—he won’t let me keep the baby if I have it.”

“Took what, sweetheart? What did you take?” Eleanor pulled Clara away from the sill, latching the window shut against the whistling wind.

Clara shoved her trembling hand beneath the mattress, dragging out a small, water-damaged flash drive wrapped inside a plastic sandwich bag. “His accounts. The real estate transfers for the harbor project. But Mom… that’s not the worst part. There are pictures. Other girls before me. Ones who didn’t want to sign away their land. They didn’t just leave town. He hurt them.”

Eleanor stared at the tiny plastic piece in her hand. The depth of Julian’s depravity was far worse than domestic cruelty; it was systematic slaughter disguised as regional commerce.
