Chapter 3 - The Cold Kitchen

Julian lingered for another agonizing second before retreating down the gravel path, his footsteps crunching deliberately against the wet stone. Eleanor waited until the red taillights of his sedan disappeared past the tall cypress trees lining the lane. Only then did she lock the heavy deadbolt, turn the latch, and lean her back against the thick oak wood.

Her breath came out in a sharp hiss. Her heartbeat, once suppressed, pounded violently in her ears. He had lied. Worse, he knew she was lying. Julian was not a man who left stones unturned; he had spotted Clara’s muddy tire tracks near the rear garden shed. Clara was twenty-four, fragile, and carrying Julian’s child. The law in this small county belonged to men like Julian Vance—wealthy developers whose money paved the town council’s pockets. Going to the local sheriff would only result in Clara being escorted back to her marital home, labeled hysterical and mentally unfit.
