Chapter 12 - The Detective’s Call

The glowing screen of Maya’s phone pulsed with an incoming call from an unknown, restricted number as she stood amidst the chaos of the smoking apartment building. Sirens wailed in the distance, drawing closer by the second as fire trucks and police cruisers converged on the scene. Clara was still slumped against the concrete retaining wall, sobbing softly into Arthur’s shoulder while Chloe tried to comfort her with trembling hands. Maya stepped a few feet away from her family, ignoring the acrid smell of smoke drifting from the blown-out basement vents, and swiped her thumb across the screen to answer the call.
“Hello?”
Maya said firmly, her voice steady despite the adrenaline still pumping through her veins.
“This is Maya Miller.”
“Miss Miller, this is Detective Vance,”
a deep, authoritative voice came through the speaker, crisp and entirely businesslike.
“I received the encrypted database and financial logs you transmitted to my departmental email twenty minutes ago. I also received your emergency dispatch report regarding the explosion at your residence.”
“We made it out, Detective, but our apartment is destroyed,”
Maya replied, her eyes narrowing as she watched firefighters unroll heavy yellow hoses near the smoldering entrance.
“Did you look at the files? Do you have enough to prove that Page orchestrated this entire fraud scheme?”
There was a brief pause on the other line, accompanied by the rustling of heavy paper and the clicking of computer keys.
“We’ve decrypted the primary ledger, Miss Miller,”
Detective Vance said gravely.
“The offshore accounts, the forged guarantor forms, and the fake identities match a massive, multi-million-dollar syndicate operation that federal agencies have been tracking for over a year. Your sister wasn’t just a low-level gambler; she was the regional front coordinator for the entire network.”
Maya closed her eyes, a cold shiver running down her spine despite the mild afternoon sun. Every horrific revelation about Page kept scaling higher into unimaginable territory.
“Where is she, Detective? She called us right before the bomb went off. She knows everything.”
“We traced the ping from her burner phone less than ten minutes ago,”
Detective Vance replied, his tone sharpening instantly.
“She’s currently holed up in a private hangar at the municipal airfield across town, preparing to board a private charter flight out of the country with the remaining unlaundered capital. My tactical units are moving in right now, but we need someone she trusts—or someone she thinks she can manipulate—to secure the physical master token before she boards that plane. Otherwise, she’ll wipe the remaining servers from the air, and we’ll never recover your family’s assets.”
Maya stared blankly across the smoke-filled street, her mind racing at a million miles an hour.
“You want me to go there?”
she asked, disbelief coloring her voice.
“You want me to confront her at the airfield?”
“It’s the only way, Miss Miller,”
Detective Vance said solemnly.
“I can have an unmarked car pick you up from your location in three minutes. But I need your answer right now.”
Maya looked back at her parents. Arthur was holding Clara protectively, both of them looking completely broken, stripped of their home, their security, and their delusions. Chloe looked up at Maya with terrified, pleading eyes, silently begging her not to walk back into the lion's den. Maya turned away from her family, gripping the phone tightly in her hand as she made the most consequential decision of her life.
“Send the car, Detective,”
Maya whispered, her voice hardening with absolute determination.
