Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point in the Entryway

The heavy oak entryway door of the modern apartment remained slightly ajar, letting in the harsh urban chill of a late November evening. Inside, the ambient light caught the rich textures of the abstract artwork hanging on the living room wall, illuminating a space that had suddenly transformed into a battlefield. Clara stood rigid near the textured floor rug, her fingers trembling slightly as she clutched the hem of her soft pink sweater. Her gray pants felt heavy, weighed down by the sheer gravity of the confrontation she had initiated. Across from her, Maya stood frozen in her blue sleeveless top, her brown pants bunching around her ankles as she absorbed the verbal blow. Clara’s voice cut through the tense air, vibrating with a desperate, misplaced loyalty.

“You want me to sell my home?”

Clara demanded, her face tightening with acute stress as she looked directly at her youngest daughter.

“Your sister needs that money!”

Maya stared at her mother, her chest heaving beneath the blue fabric as a cold realization settled deep in her stomach. Page was drowning again, but this time, the ocean was wide enough to pull the entire family under. Maya took a sharp step forward, the distance between them closing instantly. She clenched her fists so tightly that her knuckles turned stark white, the skin stretching taut over her fingers. A muscle twitched furiously along her jawline as she let out a breath that was half-laugh, half-sob, the sheer unfairness of the demand choking her vocal cords.

“I’m not paying Page’s debt.”

Maya shouted back, her voice cracking with a raw, defensive fury that echoed off the high apartment ceilings.

Clara flinched, but her expression hardened into something bitter and unforgiving. She thrust her hand forward, pointing a shaking finger directly at Maya’s chest, her eyes narrowing as she escalated the fight.

“She is your flesh and blood! If we don’t refinance this apartment, the loan sharks will take everything she has left, and it will be on your conscience!”

Arthur stepped out from the shadows near the hallway, his green sweater looking dull under the harsh recessed lighting. His gray pants brushed against the doorframe as he moved forward, his expression a tight, worried mask of paternal dread. He didn’t say a word, but his eyes darted nervously between his wife and his younger daughter, sensing that the fragile peace of their household had shattered beyond repair. Maya spun around, her face flushed with a terrifying mix of exhaustion and absolute refusal, her eyes blazing as she glared at both of her parents.

“You think Page is just in a tight spot?”

Maya yelled back, her voice dropping an octave into a low, terrifying register of pure frustration.

“She isn’t in debt because of bad luck, Mom. She’s funding a secret underground gambling ring, and I have the bank statements to prove it.”
