Chapter 1: The Hidden Mark

The grand dining hall of L’Étoile sparkled under crystal chandeliers, but between Mr. Julian Santoni and the young waitress, Elena, the air turned icy. Julian stood tall, his dark eyes locked on the fresh red laceration on Elena’s forearm. She pulled her silver tray tightly against her chest, trembling slightly as she stepped back onto the polished marble floor.
"Who did that?" Julian asked again, his voice dropping an octave. It wasn't the voice of a demanding customer; it carried the weight of a man accustomed to authority and unyielding justice.
Elena swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward the double doors leading to the kitchen. "It was an accident, sir. A broken glass in the prep station. I swear."
Julian didn't move an inch. He had lived through enough conflict in his life to recognize the difference between an accidental cut and a deliberate mark of violence. The angle of the scratch and the faint bruise forming near her wrist spoke of a harsh, restrictive grip.
"An accident doesn't leave grip marks on a wrist, Elena," Julian said softly, stepping closer. "Tell me the truth."
"Please, Mr. Santoni," she whispered, her voice cracking. "If I cause a scene, I’ll lose this job. I need this job."

Julian glanced across the dining room toward the manager's station, where a burly head chef named Marcus was glaring at them with folded arms. Julian recognized the posture—it was intimidation masked as supervision. Without another word, Julian pulled a pristine silk handkerchief from his breast pocket and held it out to her.
"Wrap this around it," Julian said calmly. "And when your shift ends tonight, do not leave through the back alley alone."
