Chapter 8 - The Price of a Name

The man in the tailored suit stopped three paces away from Maya, his posture relaxed yet radiating an aura of absolute dominance. He glanced down briefly at the sleeping baby in the carrier, a cold smile touching the corners of his mouth.

"Such a shame," the man murmured, his voice smooth and entirely devoid of warmth. "If Diane had just kept her mouth shut twenty years ago, none of you would even know my name. But secrets have a habit of rotting from the inside out."

"Get away from them, Julian," Diane spoke up, her voice surprisingly steady as she stepped between the stranger and the children. She picked up the iron poker from the floor, holding it with both hands. "The deal was between your father and me. The children weren't part of it."

"My father is dead, Diane," Julian replied, his eyes narrowing as he looked down at the older woman. "And contracts don't die with the signatories. When your brother stole the ledger and ran off with half our holdings, he thought he was protecting his family. But all he did was mortgage your great-grandchildren's futures."

Maya’s mind reeled. Her great-uncle? The family history she had been told growing up was a carefully constructed fairy tale of hard-working ancestors who built an honest life. Nobody had ever mentioned a stolen ledger, a secret empire, or a blood debt.

"Is that true?" Maya asked, her voice cracking as she stared at Diane. "Did my grandfather steal something? Is that why we're being hunted?"

Diane wouldn't meet her eyes. She kept her gaze fixed on Julian, the knuckles of her hands white against the iron poker. "He didn't steal it, Maya. He took back what belonged to our family before they turned it into a syndicate."

"Semantics," Julian said smoothly, sliding his hands into the pockets of his tailored trousers. He took a slow step to the side, blocking the only clear path to the front door. Arthur was waiting outside the smashed window, effectively sealing every exit. "The ledger contains the names, the accounts, and the hidden assets that built this town. And the last known copy... is right here in this house."

Marcus began to cry softly, burying his face deeper into Maya's jeans. Zuri was trembling, her small hands clutching the fabric of Maya's jacket. Maya knew she had to get them out, ledger or no ledger.

"We're leaving," Maya said firmly, gathering her strength. "Move out of the way, Julian, or I swear I'll scream until the entire neighborhood wakes up."

May you like

Julian laughed softly, a humorless sound that echoed off the hallway walls. "Go ahead and scream, Maya. Every house on this cul-set-sac belongs to us."
