Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Betrayal

The evening air carried the distinct chill of late autumn, pressing against the screen door of Diane’s suburban home. Inside, the familiar scent of old parchment, peppermint tea, and floor wax provided a comforting cocoon. Sixty-year-old Diane stood with her hand still gripping the brass doorknob, her chest tightening as she stared through the glass at the small, unexpected assembly on her porch. Her short gray hair framed a face that instantly hardened into a mask of guarded skepticism.

"What are y'all doing here?" Diane asked, her voice dropping an octave as she pulled the door inward, letting the cool draft sweep across the entryway.

Thirty-year-old Maya stood under the flickering porch light, her long black braids resting heavily against her dark jacket. Without waiting for an explicit invitation, Maya lifted the plastic car seat carrying her sleeping baby and stepped past Diane into the hallway. Seven-year-old Marcus in his white t-shirt and six-year-old Zuri in her denim jacket with shimmering hair beads slipped inside right behind their mother, their eyes wide and quiet.

Maya walked directly into the living room, setting the baby's car seat gently onto the floral-patterned sofa. She turned to face Diane, who had followed them closely, her rust-colored sweater brushing against the doorframe.

"Listen, Aunt Diane, I need you to watch the kids," Maya said, her tone a rushed mixture of desperation and exhaustion. "I'm flying out with my boyfriend, my flight leaves in three hours."

Diane crossed her arms, her fingers digging into the wool of her sleeves as frustration flared in her dark eyes. She gestured sharply with one hand, cutting the air between them.

"You never asked me!" Diane snapped.

"I got nowhere else to take them," Maya replied, her gaze steadfast and unyielding.

"Not my problem," Diane shot back, her voice flat and uncompromising.

Diane abruptly turned on her heel, marching back toward the front door with deliberate, heavy steps. Maya, Marcus, and Zuri stared after her in absolute shock, the silence in the room suddenly deafening.

"Where are you going?" Maya asked, her voice cracking slightly.

"Bingo night," Diane said, grabbing her car keys from the console table.

May you like

Before Maya could protest, Diane pulled the front door open, stepped out into the night, and slammed it shut behind her, leaving them alone in the dark house with a sleeping baby and a ticking clock.
