Chapter 7 - Cold Wake

The drainage canal opened into the freezing, wind-whipped expanse of Lake Michigan.
The midnight storm had churned the lake into rolling, black swells that crashed furiously against the concrete breakwaters of the Chicago shoreline. A hundred yards ahead through the freezing rain, the red stern lights of a high-speed luxury yacht sliced through the darkness, heading for open water.
On the maintenance pier, Matteo smashed the padlock of an old municipal harbor patrol launch with the butt of his pistol.
"Can you handle the throttle?" he shouted over the howling gale.
"Just keep the guns loaded," Anna replied, leaping into the captain's chair and turning the dual ignition keys.
The twin diesel engines roared to life, coughing black exhaust before settling into a powerful, rhythmic rumble. Anna slammed the twin levers forward. The heavy steel patrol boat lurched through the harbor chop, its blunt bow smashing through the whitecap waves, throwing freezing sheets of spray across the wheelhouse.
Matteo stood at the stern, pulling an old flare launcher and a heavy tactical rifle from the harbor patrol’s emergency locker.
"She’s heading for an offshore freighter," Matteo shouted, pointing through the salt-crusted glass.
Two miles out in the deep water, the towering silhouette of an unflagged container ship lay anchored, dark and ominous against the stormy sky. Helena wasn't just running; she was retreating to an international transport that could carry her beyond the reach of any extradition treaty.
"We won't catch her before she hits the gangway!" Anna yelled, wrestling the wheel as a massive wave slammed into the hull, tilting the boat violently to port.
"We don't have to catch the yacht," Matteo said, his dark eyes narrowing with lethal precision. "We take the rudder."
He stepped out onto the open, rain-slicked bow, wedging his boot into the forward cleat to anchor his footing against the rolling swells. He raised the heavy rifle, sighting down the barrel through the sheets of horizontal rain.
Three hundred yards. The red lights of Helena's yacht bobbed erratically in the heavy sea.
Matteo waited for the crest of a wave, breathing out slowly despite the freezing wind.
He pulled the trigger three times.
The heavy, armor-piercing rounds cracked through the storm, striking the yacht’s exposed outboard steering hydraulics. A spray of pink fluid erupted into the churning foam behind the vessel.
The yacht jerked violently to the left, spinning broadside into a massive, breaking wave that nearly capsized it. The vessel lost its forward thrust, wallowing helplessly in the trough of the swells.
"Bring us alongside!" Matteo roared, racking the bolt.
Anna spun the wheel hard, accelerating straight toward the crippled yacht. The steel bow of the patrol boat slammed against the fiberglass hull with a deafening screech of grinding metal.
Anna drew her weapon, vaulting over the shattered gunwale onto Helena’s deck just as two armed mercenaries stepped out of the salon with submachine guns raised.
Anna fired twice, dropping the first guard onto the teak decking.
Matteo vaulted in behind her, his combat knife flashing in a lethal arc that disabled the second man before he could clear his holster.
The salon doors flew open.
Helena Vance stood inside, soaked, her blonde hair plastered to her skull, holding a submachine gun leveled directly at Anna's chest.

"You should have stayed in the fire, maid!" Helena screamed, pulling the trigger.
