Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Pines

The rugged coastline of the Pacific Northwest breathed mist through the towering Douglas firs. Two years had passed since the flames in the Scottish Highlands had dissolved the Rossi ledger. In a secluded timber-framed house overlooking the churning gray waves of Puget Sound, Anna stood by the wide bay window. Her hair had grown long again, cascading in dark waves past her shoulder blades.
Behind her, the faint aroma of roasted coffee and cedarwood filled the warm kitchen. Matteo approached silently in wool socks and a faded denim shirt, wrapping his muscular arms around her waist. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling her clean scent of sea salt and sweet almond.
"You're awake early," he murmured, his morning stubble rough against her skin.
Anna leaned back against his broad chest, placing her hands over his. "Elena called last night while you were checking the perimeter. She passed her medical boards in Melbourne with honors. She’s finally happy, Matteo. Truly happy."
"Because of you," Matteo said softly, kissing her temple.
The peaceful silence was suddenly broken by a sharp, high-pitched whistle outside.
Matteo went rigid instantly. It wasn't the wind, nor was it the cries of the gulls. It was the distinct aerodynamic whine of a low-altitude surveillance drone cutting through the sea fog.
Matteo moved with terrifying, instinctive speed. He threw Anna down behind the heavy stone kitchen island just as the reinforced glass of the bay window shattered inward in an explosion of crystalline shards.
A single, suppressed, high-velocity sniper round tore through the exact spot where Matteo's head had rested a second earlier, burying itself deep into the oak cabinetry with a dull, concussive thud.
Anna’s breath hitched in her throat, her hand automatically reaching for the nine-millimeter pistol mounted in the hidden magnetic holster beneath the island counter.
"Sniper on the northern ridge," Matteo whispered, his jaw locked in iron certainty. "Three hundred yards out."
"How did anyone find this place?" Anna asked, her pulse hammering against her ribs. "Hayes wiped the deeds through three international dummy corporations."
Matteo didn't answer. He crawled toward the living room hallway to retrieve the tactical assault case beneath the floorboards.
Before he could reach it, the house's landline—a dedicated, hardwired copper line with an unlisted number known only to Director Hayes—began to ring.
The sound echoed through the ruined living room like a death knell.
Matteo grabbed the receiver from the wall, keeping his back pressed flat against the drywall. "Speak."

A distorted, electronically modulated voice hummed through the speaker: "Director Hayes was found dead in the Potomac River three hours ago, Matteo. Your pardons died with him. Look out your front door."
