Chapter 12 - The Architect's Vault

"My name is Dr. Sarah Bennett," the woman said, ushering Lena quickly down the steep wooden steps into the trawler’s cramped cabin. She locked the hatch above them, drawing a heavy blackout curtain across the port holes. "I worked with your mother. I was the one who helped her isolate the genetic markers before Arthur’s men moved in."

Lena slumped onto the wooden bench, her body shaking uncontrollably from hypothermia and shock. Sarah immediately draped a heavy wool blanket over her shoulders, handing her a mug of hot coffee that smelled strongly of chicory.

"Jordan is dead," Lena said flatly, her voice void of emotion. "They killed him at the clinic. Miller was there."

Sarah’s hands paused on the counter, her jaw tightening. "Chris Jordan knew the risks. He stayed behind to give us a fighting chance. If you have the original blood analysis, we can finish what Victoria started."

Lena placed the thermal container and the laboratory files on the small galley table. Sarah took the vial of Lena’s blood, holding it up to the overhead halogen lamp.

"The Aegis compound," Sarah murmured, her voice laced with awe and sorrow. "It isn't just a neuro-inhibitor. Arthur told his buyers it could be used for mind control and memory erasure. But Victoria designed it as a living encryption protocol. It was meant to protect whistleblowers—storing gigabytes of proprietary evidence within synthesized DNA chains inside a human host."

"The evidence against Arthur’s syndicate," Lena realized, the pieces finally snapping into place. "It isn't on a server or a hard drive. It's inside me."

"Precisely," Sarah said, pulling a specialized laptop and a portable gene-sequencing dock from an under-floor compartment. "Arthur was never trying to cure you. He was dosing you with counter-reagents, trying to force your body to metabolize the sequence so he could harvest the files and sell the synthetic weapon to the highest bidder."

Sarah connected the vial to the sequencer. The machine hummed to life, lines of digital code scrolling across the screen as it began decoding the biological data.

"If this completes," Sarah whispered, "we have the offshore accounts, the names of every corrupt official—including Miller—and the full distribution roster of the Aegis project."

A progress bar appeared on the monitor: DECRYPTION: 14%... 22%... 38%...

Suddenly, the trawler rocked violently as a heavy thud landed on the deck above.

The low, menacing rumble of multiple high-powered speedboat engines vibrated through the wooden hull, circling the pier like hungry wolves.

Through the cabin intercom speaker, a familiar, smooth voice crackled over the ship's marine radio channel.

"Lena," Arthur’s voice boomed through the speaker. "Come on up, sweet girl. Don't make me sink the boat with both of you inside."
