Chapter 1 - The Trap Springs Shut

The fluorescent bulbs in Exam Room 4 hummed with a cold, relentless buzz. Lena lay stiff against the crinkling paper lining of the gurney, her knuckles white where she gripped the edge of her oversized gray hoodie. Every muscle in her body screamed to run, but she remained motionless, staring fixedly at the frosted glass window where three silhouettes had gathered.
"Someone has been poisoning you," Dr. Jordan repeated, his tone dropping from clinical detachment to sharp accusation.
Her father, Arthur, stood frozen, the rehearsed warmth draining from his features until only raw panic remained. Beside him, her mother, Eleanor, clutched her cardigan tightly against her chest, her breathing shallow and ragged.
"That’s absurd," Arthur stammered, stepping between the doctor and Lena, his voice rising in artificial indignation. "She’s a sick child. You don't know what you're talking about! We brought her here for help after a fall!"
"It wasn't a fall, Mr. Vance," Detective Miller interjected as he crossed the threshold. Two uniformed officers stepped into the room, their hands resting cautiously near their belts. Miller held up a clear evidence bag containing an empty syringe retrieved from Arthur’s coat pocket during the initial intake search. "And this clinic ran a rapid panel. The tranquilizer in her bloodstream is industrial grade. It’s strictly regulated, traceable directly to your pharmaceutical supply firm."
Arthur’s jaw worked soundlessly. His eyes darted to the observation window, calculating distances, exits, and odds. Lena watched his face twist into an expression she had never seen before—not the devoted father who tucked her in, but a cornered predator realizing his snare had been turned against him.
Underneath her hemline, Lena’s trembling fingers slid over the miniature plastic recording unit taped to her skin. The red indicator light flickered faintly against the fabric of her waistband. Every threat, every forced dose over the last four months had been captured on its micro-drive.
"Lena, darling," Arthur whispered, turning toward her with eyes wide and wild. "Tell them. Tell them you’ve been taking pills on your own. Tell them about your episodes."
Lena swallowed the bile rising in her throat, meeting his gaze for the first time in years without flinching. "I didn't take anything, Dad," she said, her voice steadying. "You put it in my morning tea. Every single day."
Eleanor let out a strangled cry, staggering back against the sink counter. "Arthur... what is she saying?"
"Don't listen to her! She’s hallucinating from the concussion!" Arthur barked, lunging toward the bed with outstretched hands.
The officers moved instantly, slamming him against the partition wall before his fingers could graze Lena's sleeve. Metal cuffs clicked shut with finality. As they dragged him backward into the corridor, Arthur stopped struggling for a fraction of a second, locking eyes with Eleanor.

Instead of pleading, he smiled—a chilling, hollow smirk that cut straight through the chaos.
"Check the house safe, Eleanor," Arthur rasped as the officers wrenched him through the doorway. "Tell our daughter who signed the trust policy."
