Chapter 9 - The Poisoned Air

The sharp hiss of the inhaler releasing its aerosolized contents broke the tension in the hallway instantly.
Detective Miller lunged forward, grabbing Clara’s wrist with a firm, practiced grip and wrenching the blue plastic device away from her mouth before she could take a second dose. He tossed it onto the shattered glass floor, where it skidded against the baseboard and came to a stop near David’s feet.
"What are you doing?" Miller demanded, twisting her arm behind her back with enough force to snap her posture forward. "Put your hands behind your back, Clara Evans. You're under arrest."
Clara didn't fight him. She didn't scream, she didn't cry, and she didn't resist as the cold metal cuffs clicked securely around her slender wrists. Instead, a slow, unsettling smile spread across her pale lips, her eyes locked triumphantly onto David.
"You're too late, David," Clara whispered, her voice carrying an eerie, sing-song cadence that chilled him to the bone. "You spent all morning looking for that little blue toy for Lily... but you never checked what was actually inside the canister, did you?"
David froze. He stared down at the blue plastic inhaler resting against the baseboard near his sneakers. A cold realization rushed over him, sharp and blinding.
"What did you do?" David asked, his voice trembling uncontrollably as he clutched Lily tighter against his chest, shielding her face.
Miller noticed the shift in David’s tone. He yanked Clara upright and shoved her gently toward the waiting uniformed officer by the front door. "Secure her in the cruiser. Read her her rights. Do not let her speak to anyone."
The officer nodded and hauled Clara away down the hallway.
Miller turned his attention back to David, kneeling down on the glass-littered floor to inspect the discarded inhaler. He picked it up carefully with a gloved hand, holding it up to the overhead light. The label on the side had been peeled back slightly, revealing a small, hand-written medical warning sticker underneath that had been taped over the manufacturer's logo.
"This isn't albuterol," Miller muttered, his eyes widening as he read the tiny print. "This is a high-potency muscle relaxant combined with a fast-acting paralytic agent. If she had taken a full dose..." Miller trailed off, looking up at David in stunned horror. "...it would have stopped her breathing entirely within seconds."
David felt the ground spinning beneath his feet. The terrifying puzzle pieces clicked together with brutal clarity. Clara hadn't just been withholding the rescue inhaler to be cruel; she had swapped the life-saving medicine out entirely, turning a medical safety net into a lethal weapon designed to look like a tragic asthma attack.
She had planned to eliminate Lily right here in the living room, under the guise of an incurable medical emergency, just as she had apparently done with Chloe four years ago.
Lily let out a quiet sniffle, burying her face deeper into David’s neck. "Daddy... I want to go outside. It smells bad in here."
"We're going, sweetheart. Right now," David choked out, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes as he turned toward the front door.
Before David could take a single step, the heavy front door swung open again, revealing a fresh wave of flashing red and blue police lights painting the hallway in strobing crimson and azure. But it wasn't a backup officer standing on the porch.

It was the babysitter, holding a sealed manila folder and looking pale with terror.
