Chapter 11 - The Empty Cruiser

The sharp sound of shouting officers cut through the strobing red and blue lights outside, followed by the heavy slam of a car door and the screech of tires spinning against wet asphalt.
Detective Miller dropped the manila folder onto the hallway console table and drew his service pistol again in one swift, fluid motion. "Stay here," he ordered David, before turning and bolting down the front steps toward the driveway.
David clutched Lily tightly, stepping out onto the porch just in time to witness the chaos unfolding near the curb.
The rear door of the police cruiser sat wide open, swinging uselessly in the damp morning breeze. One uniformed officer was leaning against the hood of the car, holding a bruised jaw and gasping for air, while another officer was sprinting toward the edge of the property, staring helplessly down the empty suburban street.
The silver sedan that had been parked inside the garage—Clara’s car—was nowhere to be seen.
Miller skidded to a halt beside the cruiser, his face hardened into a mask of pure frustration. He grabbed his shoulder radio. "All units, all units! We have a prisoner escape! Suspect Clara Evans has fled the scene in a silver sedan, heading southbound toward Route 9! Lock down all perimeter exits immediately!"
David felt the ground drop out from beneath him. She was gone. The master manipulator, the architect of a nightmare that had spanned years, had just slipped through their fingers right under the noses of half a dozen armed police officers.
"How?" David yelled across the lawn, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and rage. "How did she get out of the cuffs? How did she take the car?"
The bruised officer staggered over, holding a heavy metal handcuff dangling limply from one wrist, the steel hinge cleanly snapped in half with a specialized pocket tool.
"She... she asked for a tissue," the officer panted, his face pale with embarrassment and shock. "When I leaned in, she didn't use a tissue. She had a ceramic shackle key hidden inside the lining of her sweater cuff. She unlocked one side, elbowed me in the jaw, slid into the front seat, and hit the gas before I could draw my weapon."
David stared down the empty street where the silver sedan had vanished. The cold realization washed over him with terrifying clarity: Clara wasn't running away to hide. She had executed phase two of her master plan.
And Lily was her primary objective.
"She's coming back," David whispered, the words barely escaping his dry lips.
Miller turned around, his eyes locking onto David with urgent intensity. "What did you say?"
"She left the ledger, she left the fake confession, she left the poisoned inhaler," David said, his voice rising in panic as he clutched his daughter closer. "None of those things were mistakes, Miller! They were decoys to distract you while she accessed the master server in the garage! She has backup copies of every digital file, every bank account, every asset we own, stored on an off-site drive!"
Miller cursed under his breath and reached for his radio. "We need to get you and your daughter into protective custody right now. Get inside the house—"

Before Miller could finish the sentence, every light in the suburban neighborhood flickered violently and then clicked off completely, plunging the street into pitch-black darkness.
