Chapter 12 - The Bluff Called

Julian’s laughter died instantly in his throat. The cigar in his hand trembled just a fraction of an inch, spilling a tiny speck of ash onto his expensive cashmere sleeve. He quickly brushed it away, forcing a harder, more aggressive mask over his features.
"You're bluffing," Julian snapped, his voice losing its playful cadence. "Apex Holdings has airtight legal documentation stamped by three separate county magistrates. You don't have a leg to stand on."
"County magistrates don't have jurisdiction over federal historical trust land, Julian," Marcus replied, maintaining his absolute composure. "The moment your shell company filed that asset seizure, it triggered an automatic audit by the Department of the Interior. Your corporate registry in the Caymans is currently being subpoenaed as we speak."
Julian stared hard at Marcus, searching his eyes for any sign of panic or hesitation. Finding none, a bead of cold sweat broke out along Julian's hairline, mixing with the damp mist of the rainy night.
"You're lying," Julian growled, slamming his fist against the steering wheel. "You're trying to scare me into backing down because you lost everything!"
"Did I?" Marcus asked quietly. He straightened up, stepping back from the car door. "Check your encrypted messaging app, Julian. The one you use to run your offshore accounts."
Julian’s eyes darted to his phone sitting on the passenger seat. The screen was lighting up with a rapid-fire sequence of notification banners. With trembling fingers, Julian picked up the device, tapped the screen, and began to read.
As his eyes scanned the incoming messages from his chief financial officer, all the color drained completely from Julian’s face. The smug, arrogant conqueror vanished, replaced by a desperate, trapped man realizing he had just walked into an absolute financial execution.
"This... this isn't possible," Julian stammered, looking up through the windshield at Marcus. "The accounts... they're locked. The SEC has frozen our primary liquidity pool!"
"That's what happens when you commit wire fraud across state lines using federal land as collateral," Marcus said coldly. "You didn't win my family's firm, Julian. You just inherited a multi-million-dollar federal investigation with your name written at the very top of the indictment."
Julian threw the car door open, shoving past Marcus with a wild, panicked look in his eyes. "You son of a bitch! You set me up!"
"No, Julian," Marcus replied, not even flinching as Julian stepped aggressively into his personal space. "You set yourself up the moment you decided to prey on desperate people and weaponize fake love for corporate greed."
Back in the SUV parked twenty yards away, David looked down at his digital tablet, watching the audio waveform spike as Julian’s panicked shouts echoed clearly through the hidden microphone clipped inside Marcus's lapel.
"We got him," David breathed, looking over at Maya. "That's a full verbal admission of asset manipulation on tape."
Maya stared through the rain-spattered windshield at the two men standing under the diner's neon lights. A profound sense of weight lifted from her chest, but the shadow of everything they had been through still lingered heavily in the air.

Suddenly, Julian reached inside his jacket, his hand darting toward his shoulder holster with a sudden, violent motion.
