Chapter 8

Arthur’s sudden lunge was met with immediate, decisive action. Julian Cross sidestepped with surprising agility, planting a firm hand against Arthur’s chest and sending the panicked executive sprawling backward over his leather chair. Arthur crashed heavily to the polished wood floor, his sleek black suit jacket tearing slightly at the shoulder seam. He gasped for air, clutching his bruised ribs while glaring up with sheer venom.

Marcus remained frozen in his seat, realizing that any attempt at resistance would only deepen his legal liability. He looked at his father, hoping against hope for a shred of familial clemency, but Victor’s gaze was like chipped ice. The old man slowly closed the fountain pen, capping it with a definitive click that sounded like a gunshot in the quiet room.

"It’s over, Arthur," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion as he secured the micro-SD card back into his pocket. "Federal marshals were notified the moment we synced the primary server. By the time the markets close this afternoon, every asset tied to your offshore accounts will be frozen under federal injunction."

The boardroom doors swung open again, but this time it wasn't an executive entering. Two uniformed corporate security officers, summoned automatically by the building's emergency compliance protocol, stepped into the room. They flanked Arthur, who was slowly pushing himself up from the floor, his face bruised by humiliation and rage. Without a word of protest, the security guards placed heavy hands on Arthur’s shoulders and guided him toward the exit. He cast one final, murderous glare at Elena, his lips parting in a silent curse before the heavy doors closed behind him.

Marcus lowered his head into his hands, his shoulders shaking with quiet defeat. The empire he had sought to steal had slipped through his fingers, leaving him exposed to the full weight of federal prosecution. Victor did not look at his son. Instead, he turned his chair slightly to face Elena, studying her with a complex mix of sorrow, pride, and lingering disbelief.

"You took your mother’s name," Victor said softly, his voice carrying across the quiet room. "You worked your way up from the bottom of the compliance department instead of asking for a corner office on this floor. Why?"

Elena met his gaze steadily. "Because if I had walked in here as a Vanguard by blood, I would never have seen the rot from the inside, Grandfather. Power without accountability breeds corruption. I wanted to earn the right to save this company, not inherit the right to watch it burn."

Victor let out a long, shuddering sigh that seemed to shed decades of accumulated fatigue. He reached across the table, his weathered hand resting tentatively over hers. "You saved more than the company, Elena. You saved what was left of our family’s honor."
