Chapter 9: The Afternoon Catch

By midday, the charter boat had drifted into a sheltered cove where the water turned a brilliant shade of turquoise over a sandy bottom. Marcus cut the engines completely, letting the vessel rock gently in the warm summer breeze, and handed out light spinning rods rigged with fresh shrimp bait to Leo and Toby.
"Drop your lines right near that rock outcrop," Marcus instructed, pointing toward a jagged granite formation rising out of the water near the shoreline. "That's where the sea bass like to hang out during the heat of the day."
Toby concentrated fiercely, his tongue poking out the corner of his mouth as he lowered his line into the water with exaggerated care. Within seconds, his rod tip twitched violently, bending downward toward the surface with a sharp tug that nearly pulled the lightweight pole from his small hands.
"I've got one! I've got one!" Toby yelled in a mixture of panic and sheer excitement, reeling frantically as Marcus rushed over to help him guide the struggling fish toward the surface.
"Steady, buddy, don't yank too hard or you'll snap the line," Marcus coached, guiding the boy's hands with patient expertise.
With a final splash, a silver-scaled porgy broke the surface, flashing brightly in the sunlight before Marcus scooped it up in a mesh landing net and swung it safely aboard. Toby stared down at the wriggling fish with wide, triumphant eyes, looking up at his grandfather as if he had just conquered a sea monster single-handedly.

Arthur laughed out loud, a rich, genuine sound that chased away the last lingering shadows of stress from the previous day's ordeal. "That's a keeper, kiddo! We'll have Clara cook that up for dinner tonight."
Elena stood nearby, watching the scene with a profound sense of peace. The digital fraud, the locked door, the frustrating phone calls—all of it felt like something that had happened to someone else, in another lifetime. They hadn't gotten the luxury coastal cottage they had planned for, but they had gained something far more valuable: an unscripted adventure that brought them closer together as a family.
