Chapter 14: Packing Up for Home

The morning of their departure dawned cool and crisp, carrying the sharp, refreshing scent of pine and salt water. The station wagon was packed and ready, with the blue cooler strapped securely in the back and the luggage stowed neatly alongside Toby's beach mat and their collection of sea glass and polished driftwood.

Clara stood by the screen door of the bait shop, holding a brown paper bag filled with homemade blueberry muffins and a thermos of hot coffee for the long drive back home. Joe walked out to the car, shaking Arthur's hand with a grip that left no doubt of his sincere affection.

"You make sure you check those booking platforms twice before you book your next trip," Joe warned with a friendly wink. "And if you're ever back down this way, you know where to find us—no reservation required."

"We won't forget," Elena said, stepping forward to give the old captain a warm, lingering hug. "Thank you for everything, Joe. You saved our vacation."

"We just gave you a roof, ma'am; you're the ones who made the best of it," Joe replied softly, tipping his cap as Elena climbed into the passenger seat.

Arthur slid behind the steering wheel, starting the engine with a smooth turn of the ignition key. Through the rear-view mirror, he watched Clara and Joe standing together in front of the new driftwood sign they had helped create, waving farewell as the car slowly rolled backward out of the gravel lot.

In the back seat, Toby and Leo were already deep into a quiet conversation about the dolphins they had seen and the fish they had caught, their youthful energy undiminished by the long drive ahead. Martha sat between them, smiling peacefully as she looked out the window at the passing dunes and wind-bent pines.

As they hit the interstate on-ramp heading north toward home, Arthur glanced over at Elena, who was resting her hand comfortably on his knee. The financial loss of the fraudulent rental was real, but the emotional and relational gain of their unplanned adventure was immeasurable. They had set out looking for a luxury vacation rental, but they had found something far more enduring instead.
