Chapter 14: The Final Departure

Maya and Lily followed shortly after, pausing on the porch to take one final look at the imposing facade of the Vance estate. Lily squeezed her stuffed rabbit tight, whispering a soft goodbye to the only home she had ever known before burying her face against Maya’s shoulder. Maya gave Clara a silent, meaningful nod, then turned and guided the child down the gravel path toward the waiting village taxi.

Clara stood alone in the cavernous foyer. The house was already beginning to feel hollow, the heavy silence returning to claim the hallways and high ceilings. She walked slowly down the corridor, passing the dark wooden door of the nursery, which stood wide open, revealing the empty, ash-strewn room inside. The dust motes still danced in the sunlight, but the terror that had once filled the space was gone, replaced by the quiet dignity of a secret finally laid to rest.

She walked out onto the front porch, pulling the heavy oak door shut behind her—not with a slam of frustration or anger, but with a gentle, deliberate click. She left the key resting on the mahogany side table just inside the screen door, where the federal agents could easily retrieve it.

The morning air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and salt from the distant ocean. Clara took a deep breath, filling her lungs with the untainted breeze. She walked down the gravel drive, past the iron gates that stood wide open to the world, refusing to look back as she began the walk down the hill toward the village.

She had lost the estate, she had lost the illusion of wealth, and she had lost the ghost of a marriage that never truly existed. But for the first time in her adult life, she owned her own choices. Her dark hair, fully pulled loose from its bun now, blew freely in the morning wind around her face. She wore her cream silk shirt and black skirt like armor she no longer needed to prove anything to anyone.
