Chapter 13: Packing the Past

Back inside the grand foyer, Eleanor and Maya were already packing their belongings into two large leather suitcases near the foot of the stairs. Lily was sitting on the bottom step, clutching her white stuffed rabbit—its missing button eye now sewn back on with a piece of blue thread Maya had found in the sewing basket.

"The federal agent accepted the settlement," Clara announced as she walked through the heavy front door, closing it behind her for the final time. "The house will be seized and demolished by the county next month. We have until the end of the week to clear out our personal effects."

Eleanor zipped her suitcase shut with a definitive zip, standing up and smoothing the front of her dark blue dress. Her pearl earrings caught the morning light one last time. "I've already called a taxi from the village," Eleanor said, her voice remarkably steady. "I have enough saved from my private pension to rent a small apartment near the coast in Maine. I won't be coming back."

Maya picked up her suitcase and lifted Lily into her arms, adjusting the child's yellow dress. "I found a teaching position in Boston," Maya said, offering Clara a small, genuine smile. "A fresh start for both of us. No secrets, no hidden rooms."

Clara looked at the two women she had fought so bitterly against just twenty-four hours earlier. They were no longer adversaries bound by a shared crime and a toxic estate. They were fellow survivors who had walked through the fire and managed to make it out the other side.

"I'm staying in the village until the demolition is finished," Clara said softly. "I want to watch the walls come down. I need to know the foundation is clear before I figure out what comes next."

Eleanor walked over, pausing for a moment before placing a dry, cool hand on Clara's shoulder. It was the first gesture of genuine warmth between them since Clara had married into the family. "You’re a strong woman, Clara," Eleanor said quietly. "Don't ever let another man's secrets become your cage."

With that, Eleanor picked up her bag, turned toward the open front door, and walked out into the morning sunlight without looking back.
