Chapter 15: The Riverbank Again

The black SUV pulled away from the curb, merging smoothly into the morning traffic and disappearing down Maple Street until it was nothing more than a distant dot against the urban landscape.

Sarah squeezed Leo’s hand gently. "Come on, sweetie. Let's go home."

Leo nodded, but before heading inside the building, he looked back toward the end of the block in the direction of the highway bridge. The events of the past few days felt like a strange, impossible dream, yet the weight of the silver pen and the embossed business card in his pocket was entirely real. He had entered the river an ordinary eight-year-old boy, and he had come out the other side changed.

Later that afternoon, after the apartment had been cleaned and order restored to their small world, Leo walked down to the edge of the park where the winding river ran past the neighborhood. The water flowed steadily over the smooth stones, catching the bright afternoon sunlight in a brilliant, glittering dance.

He stood at the muddy bank, looking out across the shallow current toward the distant concrete pillars of the highway bridge. The memory of the cold water, the heavy man in the ruined suit, and the terrifying silence of the empty apartment flashed briefly through his mind. But the fear was gone, replaced by a deep, quiet understanding of courage, choice, and consequence.

A gentle autumn breeze rustled the wet leaves overhead, carrying the clean scent of earth and pine. Leo reached into his pocket, his small fingers brushing against the heavy metal pen. He pulled his hand out, holding the pen up to catch the sunlight, watching the silver metal gleam brightly against the blue sky.

He smiled faintly, turning away from the river and walking back up the path toward home. The water kept flowing, steady and timeless, carrying the past away while the future waited, bright and entirely unwritten.
