CHAPTER 6: BROKEN SHADOWS

The pressure was mounting from every direction. By the third week, Mark’s bank account was down to less than three hundred dollars. He had been forced to sell his old acoustic guitar, his hunting gear, and even his late father's golden pocket watch just to pay for groceries and basic utility bills.

Worse, Sarah Vance called him with grim news from the legal front.

""Richard’s lawyers are playing dirty, Mark,"" Sarah said over the phone, her voice strained. ""They’ve hired a private investigator who is digging into every mistake you’ve ever made in your entire life. They found a bar fight you were involved in eight years ago when you were twenty-four.""

""A bar fight?"" Mark exclaimed in disbelief. ""I was defending a friend who was getting jumped! I was never even charged!""

""It doesn't matter to them,"" Sarah explained patiently. ""They are going to paint it in court as a pattern of unprovoked violence. They are also trying to subpoena your late wife’s medical records to argue that you caused her emotional stress during her pregnancy.""

""That is sick!"" Mark roared, standing up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the floor. ""Clara was the love of my life! How dare they use her like that?!""

""I know, Mark. I know,"" Sarah said softly. ""It’s disgusting. But this is what rich, desperate people do when they realize they can't win on the facts. They drown you in legal fees and smear your character until you're too exhausted to fight back.""

""I will never give up,"" Mark said through gritted teeth. ""I don't care if I have to live on the street, I am not giving Lily to those monsters.""

""I need you to stay strong, Mark,"" Sarah said. ""We have our formal evidentiary hearing in thirty days. If we can hold out until then, Brenda's CPS report will carry enormous weight with the judge.""

That night, a massive summer thunderstorm rolled over the mountains. Torrential rain lashed against the wooden roof of the cabin, and lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the dark living room in strobe-like bursts.

Lily woke up screaming.

Mark bolted out of his bed and ran into her room. She was sitting in the corner of her bed, her blanket pulled up to her chin, sobbing hysterically.

""Lily! What's wrong, baby?"" Mark cried out, wrapping his arms around her small, shaking frame.

""The... the glass!"" she sobbed, burying her nose in his shoulder. ""The glass is breaking again! Grandpa is mad!""

Mark held her tightly, rocking her back and forth as the thunder rumbled overhead. ""Shh... it's just rain, sweet pea. It's just thunder. Grandpa isn't here. Nobody can hurt you here.""

""I don't want to go back, Daddy,"" she wept, her little fingers clutching his shirt so hard her knuckles turned white. ""Aunt Bethany said if I was bad, she would locked me in the dark room again.""

Mark froze. His chest tightened until he couldn't breathe.

He pulled back gently to look at her face. ""What did you say, Lily? Locked you where?""

Lily wiped her tear-stained eyes with her sleeve, sniffling. ""When... when I spilled my juice at Aunt Bethany's house last month. She got mad and locked me in the pantry under the stairs. It was dark, Daddy. There were bugs. She told me if I cried, she’d leave me there forever.""

A cold, terrifying clarity settled over Mark. It wasn't just physical abuse during moments of anger. It was systematic, emotional cruelty.

""Did she do that often?"" Mark asked, keeping his voice as calm and gentle as humanly possible, despite the fire burning inside his chest.

Lily nodded slowly. ""Whenever you were at work and Grandpa took me to her house. She said I was noisy like you.""

May you like

Mark closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against hers. Tears slipped down his cheeks, mixing with the sweat on his skin. He felt a deep, agonizing guilt for not seeing the signs sooner, for trusting his late wife's family just because they shared her blood.

""I am so sorry, Lily,"" Mark whispered, his voice trembling with heartbreak. ""I am so, so sorry I didn't protect you sooner. But I promise you... on my life, on your mother's memory... they will never, ever put you in the dark again.""
