CHAPTER 14: MEMORIES OF CLARA

That evening, after dinner, Mark pulled out the fabric-covered photo album that Elena had brought months ago.
He sat on the living room rug with Lily leaning against his chest, her head resting comfortably on his shoulder. Together, they flipped through the pages, looking at old photographs of Clara.
""Is that Mommy?"" Lily asked, pointing her tiny finger at a photo of Clara standing in a meadow of wild grass, holding a bouquet of daisies.
""That's her,"" Mark whispered, his heart warming at the image. ""She loved daisies. Just like you love sunflowers.""
""Did she laugh loud?"" Lily asked, looking up at him.
""The loudest,"" Mark smiled fondly, remembering. ""Whenever she laughed, the whole room seemed to light up. She had a heart bigger than these mountains, Lily. And every time I look at you, I see her.""
Lily looked down at the photograph, tracing her mother's soft face with her thumb. ""Does she know we're happy, Daddy?""
Mark wrapped his arms tighter around her, pressing his cheek against her soft hair.
""She knows, sweet pea,"" Mark said with absolute certainty. ""She’s watching us right now, and she's so proud of you.""
""I wrote a letter for her today at school,"" Lily said, reaching into her dress pocket and pulling out a small, folded piece of paper.
Mark looked at the folded paper. It reminded him of the dark days when he was terrified of losing her, but now, it represented pure, unadulterated love.
""Can we send it to her?"" Lily asked.
""How do you want to send it?""
Lily pointed toward the open window, where the cool evening breeze was blowing through the trees, carrying the scent of pine and wild flowers.
Mark smiled. He carried Lily out onto the back deck. They stood together under the canopy of stars that filled the clear night sky.
Mark helped Lily fold the small piece of paper into a paper airplane.
""On three,"" Mark whispered into her ear. ""One... two... three!""
Lily threw the paper airplane into the night air. The gentle breeze caught it, lifting it high above the pine trees, carrying it up toward the sea of glittering stars.

Lily clapped her hands, her eyes filled with wonder as she watched it fly into the dark sky. ""Fly high, Mommy!""
Mark looked up at the stars, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace wash over his entire soul. The pain, the fear, the struggle, the courtrooms, and the storms—they were all behind them now. Out of the ashes of their darkest days, they had forged a life filled with dignity, strength, and love.
