Chapter 9: A Visitor in the Storm

The engine outside died with a heavy, sputtering cough, leaving only the relentless howl of the blizzard wind. Daniel stood motionless near the hearth, his hand resting tightly on the cold iron poker. Dani was pressed deep into the corner behind the oak dining table, her hands over her mouth, her eyes wide with terror.

A heavy knock echoed through the cabin door, vibrating the ancient timber.

“Daniel!” a voice called out from the porch. It was not Elizabeth’s voice, nor was it the gruff tone of a local state trooper. It was a familiar, weary baritone that carried a lifetime of reluctant obedience.

Mark.

Mark Vance was Daniel’s younger cousin, a corporate lawyer who had spent his entire career cleaning up the messes left behind by the family matriarch. He was the family’s cleaner, dispatched whenever a situation required diplomacy rather than brute force.

Daniel exhaled a slow, ragged breath, though he did not relax his grip on the poker. He stepped forward across the creaking floorboards and pulled the wooden bolt, throwing the door open.

Standing on the snow-covered porch, bundled in an expensive black overcoat dusted with white powder, stood Mark. His breath plumed into the freezing air, and his face was pale, beaten down by the biting wind. He looked entirely out of place in the rugged mountain wilderness.

“Can I come in, Daniel?” Mark asked quietly, holding up empty, gloved hands to show he carried no weapons. “It’s freezing out here, and I nearly slid off the cliff twice trying to get up this accursed mountain.”

Daniel stared at him for a long, silent moment before stepping back, allowing the door to swing open wider. “You shouldn't have come, Mark.”

Mark stepped inside, stamping the snow off his leather shoes before pulling off his gloves and warming his hands over the stone fireplace. He glanced briefly around the rustic cabin, a look of profound disbelief crossing his features. “You’re living like a hermit in the middle of nowhere while a manhunt is practically being organized back home. Aunt Elizabeth is beside herself. The police have been notified, private investigators are combing the state, and your name is being dragged through the legal mud.”

“I don’t care about the family name,” Daniel said coldly, closing the door and bolting it shut once more. He did not put the poker down. “And I don’t care about Elizabeth. Why are you here, Mark? To negotiate terms or to drag us back in chains?”

Mark sighed, running a hand through his thinning hair. He looked over at the dark corner where Dani was peeking out from behind the table, her blue eyes fixed on him with fierce distrust. Mark’s expression softened, a flicker of genuine remorse crossing his face.

“I’m not here to take you back by force, Daniel,” Mark said softly, holding his hands up in a gesture of surrender. “Elizabeth sent me because she knew if anyone could talk some sense into you, it would be me. But seeing this… seeing what happened to that little girl’s face… I think I finally understand why you ran.”
