Chapter 9: The Uninvited Guest

The heavy fog outside refused to lift, casting a permanent twilight over the sprawling lawns of the Sterling estate. Inside the grand foyer, the grandfather clock ticked methodically, marking the passage of a day that felt entirely suspended in time. Julian and Elena were in the upstairs nursery, packing a few essential bags for Maya, preparing to leave the suffocating confines of the mansion before the probate court officially intervened.

Downstairs, Clara sat alone in the formal parlor, staring blankly at the cold hearth. The silence was suddenly shattered by a sharp, aggressive pounding on the heavy oak front door. It wasn't the polite knock of a visitor or the professional tap of Officer Vance; it was the heavy, rhythmic thumping of someone demanding entry with absolute entitlement.

Clara didn't move immediately. Her heart hammered against her ribs, the sound roaring in her ears. She slowly pushed herself up from the armchair, smoothing her patterned blouse with trembling hands, and walked toward the foyer. As she reached the door, another heavy blow rattled the brass knocker.

""Open up! I know someone's in there!"" a harsh, gravelly voice yelled from the other side of the thick wood.

Clara’s hand hovered over the heavy iron deadbolt. She twisted it, pulling the door open a few inches, secured by the brass chain. Standing on the porch was a woman in her late thirties, wearing a worn leather jacket over a faded flannel shirt. Her short, unruly dark hair was damp from the fog, and her sharp, angular facial features bore an uncanny, unsettling resemblance to the photograph Julian had found in the desk. It was Arthur Vance’s daughter.

""Can I help you?"" Clara asked, her voice tight and controlled, masking the terror gripping her chest.

The woman forced her shoulder against the door, snapping the antique brass chain with a sharp crack as the heavy wood swung wide open. She stepped uninvited into the foyer, her eyes darting around the opulent hallway with a mixture of bitter resentment and predatory curiosity.

""You can stop pretending you don't know who I am, Mrs. Sterling,"" the woman sneered, crossing her arms over her chest. ""My name is Sarah. And it’s time we talked about my father’s true legacy in this house.""

Upstairs, the sound of the snapped chain echoed clearly through the vaulted ceiling. Julian froze, a diaper bag half-zipped in his hands. He looked up at Elena, whose eyes widened in sheer disbelief. Without a word, Julian dropped the bag and bolted toward the stairs, taking them two at a time, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs as he realized the ghosts of the past had finally come knocking in person.
