Chapter 13: A Clean Slate

The moving van rumbled quietly in the driveway of the modest, sunlit suburban home two towns over from the grand estate. The neighborhood was alive with the gentle sounds of suburban life—birds chirping in the oak trees, children laughing down the block, and the distant hum of morning traffic. It was a stark contrast to the oppressive, echoing silence of the Sterling mansion, but to Julian and Elena, it felt like paradise.
Julian carried a large cardboard box labeled *Kitchenware* up the short concrete walkway, his movements unhurried and relaxed. He wore a simple flannel shirt and jeans, a far cry from the immaculate, suffocating dark suits he used to wear while playing the role of the dutiful heir. Elena stood on the front porch, holding a now-toddling Maya by her tiny hands as the baby took wobbling, triumphant steps across the welcome mat.
""Careful, sweetie, keep your balance,"" Elena laughed softly, her face glowing with a genuine happiness that hadn't been present during their harrowing weeks in the mansion.
Officer Vance’s unmarked sedan pulled up quietly to the curb. The officer stepped out, wearing a casual jacket over his uniform shirt, holding a manila folder in his hand. He walked up the driveway with a relaxed stride, nodding respectfully to Julian as he set his box down on the porch railing.
""Morning, Julian, Elena,"" Vance greeted warmly, tipping his head toward the little girl. ""Looks like you’ve got a runner on your hands.""
""She’s unstoppable,"" Julian smiled, wiping a bit of sweat from his forehead. ""How did things shake out downtown, Vance? Is the legal nightmare finally over?""
""As over as decades of fraud can possibly be,"" Vance replied, opening the manila folder. ""The state officially seized the estate yesterday morning. The probate judge ruled all historical deed transfers null and void due to falsification. The property is being liquidated, and the proceeds are being directed into a public historical trust. As for Clara, she’s currently serving a six-month sentence under house arrest at a medical facility upstate due to her age and declining health.""
Elena looked down, a wave of melancholy washing over her, though it was free of bitterness. ""Did anyone visit her?""
May you like
""Sarah visited once,"" Vance said, offering a small, understanding smile. ""They didn't shout. From what the nurses reported, they just sat on the patio and talked for an hour. Maybe there's hope for them yet. As for you two, your records are completely clean. You walked away before the house collapsed on top of you, and legally, you're starting entirely from scratch.""
Julian looked at his wife and daughter, then out at the quiet, sunlit street. He didn't feel the phantom weight of a stolen legacy anymore; he felt completely weightless, grounded only by the love of his family.
