Chapter 9: The Trap Closes

The lower-level evidence annex was cold, windowless, and bathed in the sterile glow of emergency LED strips. Detective Sarah Vance moved silently down the narrow aisle between towering metal shelving units, her service pistol drawn and held at a low ready. Beside her, Officer Miller covered the intersecting corridor, his boots making no sound on the polished concrete floor. The electronic audit trail had led them directly here, isolating the exact terminal used to transmit the classified tactical coordinates to Marcus Sterling just prior to the dawn raid.

At the far end of the aisle, a solitary figure stood hunched over a glowing computer monitor, illuminated by the blue light of the screen. It was Detective Reynolds, his dark uniform jacket discarded over a nearby filing cabinet, his sleeves rolled up as he frantically downloaded remaining encrypted files onto a portable hard drive.

"End of the line, Reynolds," Sarah’s voice echoed sharply down the corridor, cutting through the hum of the climate control system.

Reynolds froze mid-motion. For a long, agonizing second, absolute silence reigned. Then, slowly, with deliberate slowness, he began to turn around, his hands held shoulder-high, though his eyes darted frantically toward the exit vector behind Sarah.

"You don't understand, Sarah," Reynolds said, his voice strained and desperate, laced with a hollow tremor. "Sterling holds the debt on every pension fund in this municipality. If his empire collapses, the entire city's infrastructure goes down with it. We were keeping the peace the only way we could."

"You traded the safety of children for a paycheck and a pension," Sarah replied, stepping closer, her weapon unwavering. "Put your hands behind your back, Reynolds. Right now."

Reynolds smiled, a bitter, twisted expression that didn't reach his eyes. "You think arresting me stops anything? Sterling is already airborne. And the network has backups of backups distributed across servers you can't even touch."

Before Sarah could close the distance to cuff him, Reynolds made a sudden, violent lunge toward a concealed wall-mounted alarm override switch. Miller reacted instantly, diving across the narrow aisle and tackling Reynolds hard to the ground. Metal shelving rattled violently as the two men crashed into the floor, a flurry of limbs and grunts breaking the sterile quiet of the annex.

Sarah holstered her weapon with one hand and quickly moved in, snapping the steel cuffs onto Reynolds’ wrists with a sharp, definitive click. The internal breach was contained, but the war was far from over.
