Chapter 7: Dawn Raid

The predawn sky was bruised purple and slate grey as a convoy of unmarked tactical vehicles rolled silently down Elmwood Avenue. The headlights were switched off, relying entirely on night-vision optics and local streetlamps to navigate the quiet suburban neighborhood. Inside the lead SUV, Detective Sarah Vance checked the magazine of her sidearm with practiced, methodical precision. Beside her, Captain Miller reviewed the tactical schematic of the target location—an expansive, modern architectural home belonging to Marcus Sterling, a prominent city councilman and the primary financial benefactor linked to the encrypted flash drive.
The convoy came to a halt two houses away from the target. The silence of the morning was absolute, broken only by the distant hum of traffic on the interstate. Sarah signaled to the tactical team in the rear vehicle, and within seconds, dark-clad figures poured out of the vans like smoke, moving with synchronized discipline toward the sprawling estate.
"Breach in five, four, three..." Miller whispered into his radio headset, his eyes fixed on the heavy oak front door of the mansion.
With a concussive blast of a pneumatic ram, the reinforced door splintered open, echoing sharply through the quiet suburban dawn. "Police! Search warrant! Nobody move!" shouted the lead tactical officer as the team flooded into the foyer, their weapon-mounted flashlights cutting through the darkened interior.
Sarah followed closely behind the second wave, her boots echoing on the polished marble flooring. The house was shockingly opulent, filled with expensive artwork and minimalist designer furniture that felt entirely cold and lifeless. The tactical team cleared the ground floor in seconds, securing a housekeeper who stood trembling near the kitchen island, wide-eyed and clutching a dish towel.
"Second floor clear! Master bedroom secure!" crackled a voice over Sarah's shoulder radio.
In the study, however, things were different. The heavy mahogany desk was dominated by a high-end workstation with dual monitors still glowing in the dim light. A small thermal printer was quietly churning out strips of paper, its auto-shredder jammed with half-destroyed financial manifests bearing offshore account numbers and shell corporation titles.

Sarah stepped up to the desk, her gloved hand gently lifting a stack of documents sitting beside an identical black USB flash drive to the one found in Lily's room. Marcus Sterling was nowhere to be found, but his leather desk chair was still warm, and a half-empty cup of espresso sat steaming beside the keyboard. He had fled mere minutes before the breach, tipped off by an internal leak within the department.
The raid had yielded physical evidence and digital trails, but the head of the serpent had slipped away into the morning mist.
