Chapter 9

The heavy oak library doors pushed open wider, and two local police officers stepped into the room, flanked by Arthur Sterling’s longtime corporate attorney, a sharp-eyed man named Richard Vance—no relation to Victoria, much to her eternal relief. Attorney Vance carried a thick leather briefcase, his expression entirely grim as he surveyed the chaotic scene in the library. He cast a brief, professional nod toward Julian and Margaret before fixing his gaze directly on the stunned, cornered blonde.
"Victoria Vance?" Officer Miller asked, stepping forward with his notepad already in hand. "I’m Detective Miller with the state financial crimes division. We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate forgery involving the Sterling Family Trust."
Victoria backed up until her shoulders hit the heavy bookshelves, her eyes darting frantically toward the door before realizing escape was mathematically and physically impossible. "This is a civil matter!" she protested, her voice rising in pitch, losing its polished composure entirely. "It’s a family dispute over estate restructuring! You have no jurisdiction here without a corporate injunction!"
Attorney Vance calmly set his briefcase down on the edge of the mahogany desk, popped the brass latches with two crisp clicks, and pulled out a stack of documents bearing federal seals. "Actually, Ms. Vance, the corporate injunction was signed by Judge Holloway at 8:00 AM this morning," the lawyer stated smoothly, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "Furthermore, the offshore accounts you routed the Sterling funds through have already been frozen by federal banking regulators. Your co-conspirators down at the downtown liquidation firm were picked up thirty minutes ago. They were remarkably eager to cooperate and hand over your signed directives."
Victoria stared at the federal documents, her mouth opening slightly in silent horror. The intricate web of deceit she had spent eighteen months meticulously constructing had unraveled in less than twenty-four hours. She looked over at Julian, pleading with her eyes for a shred of mercy, searching for any trace of the man who had loved her, or at least pretended to.
Julian looked back at her with absolute indifference. There was no anger left in his expression, only a profound, hollow emptiness. "You picked the wrong family to underestimate, Victoria," Julian said quietly. "You thought my mother was weak because she sits in a wheelchair, and you thought I was blind because I trusted you. You were wrong on both counts."
Detective Miller stepped forward, taking Victoria gently but firmly by the elbow. "Let's go, Ms. Vance. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As the officers escorted a defeated, silent Victoria out of the library and down the grand foyer toward the waiting police cruisers, the heavy double doors closed behind them with a muffled click. The storm had passed, leaving behind a profound, heavy silence in the Sterling estate.
