Chapter 8

Before Victoria’s outstretched fingers could come within a foot of Margaret, Clara moved with astonishing speed and agility for someone her age. Stepping firmly in front of the wheelchair, Clara swung the wooden walking cane in a wide, sweeping arc, bringing the heavy brass handle down with a sharp thwack against the edge of the mahogany desk, right in Victoria’s path. The loud crack echoed through the cavernous library like a gunshot, freezing Victoria in her tracks.

"Step back!" Clara commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority as she leveled the tip of the cane directly at Victoria’s chest. "You will not lay a finger on her. Not today, not ever."

Victoria stopped abruptly, her breath coming in ragged, angry gasps. Her hair had come loose from its elegant knot, falling in messy strands across her flushed face. She stared at the wooden cane, then up at Clara’s unyielding face, realizing that physical intimidation was getting her nowhere. She slowly lowered her arms, forcing her breathing to steady as a cold, calculating sneer crept back onto her lips. She adjusted the lapels of her cream-colored suit with exaggerated slowness, attempting to reclaim a shred of dignity.

"You think a piece of wood and a stubborn maid are going to save you?" Victoria hissed, her voice vibrating with malice as she backed away toward the double doors. "The police are already aware of the family dispute. And my associates outside have copies of every ledger, every forged signature, and every asset transfer. You're living in a ghost town, Julian. This house belongs to the creditors now."

Julian didn't move an inch. He watched her retreat with chilling calm. "Your associates won't be helping you, Victoria. Look out the window."

Confused and uneasy, Victoria turned her head sharply toward the tall leaded glass windows overlooking the front courtyard. Through the gray, drizzling rain, two unmarked black sedans had blocked the main security gates. Several men in dark raincoats were stepping out of the vehicles, accompanied by local law enforcement officers holding thick manila folders. The trap had closed precisely when and how Julian and his mother had planned it.

Victoria’s face went entirely bloodless. All the color drained from her cheeks, leaving her looking remarkably pale against her cream suit. She realized in a single, horrifying microsecond that she hadn't been executing a corporate raid; she had walked directly into a well-laid sting operation coordinated by the Sterling family's actual legal counsel and federal financial investigators.

"You... you set me up," Victoria whispered, her voice trembling slightly as the full weight of her legal peril crashed down upon her.

"We merely gave you enough rope," Margaret said quietly from her wheelchair, her voice steady and emotionless. "People with your ambition rarely need a push to fall; they are always entirely too eager to jump."
