Chapter 7: The Web Expands

The revelation hung in the study like a toxic cloud. Lawrence Thorne had been Arthur’s most trusted executive for over twenty years, a man who had attended family dinners, toasted at holidays, and stood beside Arthur when the company went public. The thought that Lawrence was actively collaborating with Julian to plunder the family estate felt like a physical blow to Arthur’s chest.
"Lawrence," Arthur repeated, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "He helped raise Julian. He’s engaged to Julian’s... wait." Arthur stopped, the pieces finally snapping together in his mind. "Julian isn't marrying some random socialite. He’s marrying Lawrence’s daughter, Chloe, to cement the merger of their private holdings and bury the paper trail permanently."
"Exactly," Marcus confirmed, setting his pen down. "Chloe Thorne is listed as the primary beneficiary on at least three of the offshore accounts Julian created using Elena’s forged signatures. If they get married next month, the assets become marital property, shielding them from clawback provisions under state inheritance laws. They planned this down to the calendar day."
"And Elena found out," Arthur said, the pieces of the tragic puzzle falling into place. "That's why she was targeted. She discovered the transfer documents in the home office safe when she went to look for the girls' birth certificates."
"Which is why she had to be silenced," Marcus added gravely. "The official medical examiner's report listed her death as cardiac arrest due to stress, correct?"
"Yes," Arthur said, his jaw tightening. "A sudden heart attack at thirty-two years old. The local coroner is a family friend of Lawrence Thorne. I signed off on the release because I was blinded by grief. I never asked for a toxicology report."
Marcus looked directly into Arthur’s eyes. "We need an exhumation order, Arthur. And we need it before Julian and Chloe's engagement party tonight at the downtown country club. If we hit them with federal indictments in front of their high-society friends, it will shatter their defenses completely."
Just then, the study door creaked open, and Clara peeked inside, holding a half-eaten piece of toast. She stopped when she saw Marcus, her big eyes darting between the two men. "Grandpa? Is everything okay?"
Arthur instantly softened, smoothing his expression before standing up and walking over to her. He knelt down, putting a reassuring arm around her shoulders. "Everything is fine, sweetheart. Just talking about boring adult business with Mr. Vance here. Did Sarah finish making breakfast?"
"Yes," Clara smiled faintly, the warmth of the home starting to break through her lingering fears. "She’s making us hot chocolate with marshmallows."

"Go on back and enjoy it," Arthur whispered, kissing the top of her head. "I'll be there in a minute."
As Clara scampered back down the hallway, Arthur stood up and looked back at Marcus. The weariness in his bones had been replaced by a cold, calculating determination. "Let's go to court, Marcus. Let's bring them down."
