Chapter 10: Justice in the Balance

The federal agents escorted Julian and Lawrence out through the side service doors of the country club, avoiding the horde of local reporters who had somehow already caught wind of the high-profile raid. The heavy oak doors swung shut behind them, leaving the ballroom in a state of stunned, bewildered silence. Chloe Thorne had collapsed into a chair, weeping softly into her ivory gown while her mother rushed over to comfort her, completely ostracized by the horrified guests who whispered behind cupped hands.
Arthur stood alone in the center of the room for a long moment, watching the place where his brother had just been led away. The anger that had fueled him over the past forty-eight hours had finally burned out, leaving behind a hollow, aching fatigue. He adjusted his suit jacket, turned on his heel, and walked out of the country club without uttering another word to the crowd.
Marcus Vance met him outside by the idling sedan. The crisp night air felt clean against Arthur’s face after the stifling atmosphere of the ballroom.
"Well," Marcus said, leaning against the door of his car with a tired sigh. "That went according to plan. Warrants executed, accounts frozen, primary conspirators in custody. The federal magistrate won't grant bail given the offshore flight risk."
"Thank you, Marcus," Arthur said quietly, offering his hand. "I don't know how I can ever repay you."
"Just take care of those little girls, Arthur," Marcus replied, shaking his hand firmly. "They've lost their mother. They need a home, not a battleground."
An hour later, Arthur walked back through the front doors of Sterling Manor. The house was quiet and warm. He paused in the hallway, hearing the soft murmur of television laughter coming from the family room. He walked toward the doorway and saw Sarah sitting on the sofa with Clara, Maya, and Lily curled up around her, watching an old animated movie.
Sarah looked up as Arthur entered the room. She saw the exhaustion etched into every line of his face, but she also saw something else—a profound, settling peace. She gently extricated herself from the girls and walked over to him in the hallway, pulling him into a tight, quiet embrace.
"Is it over?" she whispered against his shoulder.
"The legal battle is just beginning," Arthur replied, wrapping his arms around her and burying his face in her hair. "But the threat is gone. They're safe, Sarah. We're all safe."

Clara peeked around the edge of the sofa, her big eyes studying her grandfather with quiet affection. "Grandpa? Are you staying here with us tonight?"
Arthur pulled away from Sarah, smiled gently at the little girl, and walked over to sit on the edge of the couch, pulling Maya and Lily close on either side. "I'm not going anywhere, sweetheart. Not tonight, and not ever."
