Chapter 8: Confrontation at the Top

The heavy oak door of Dr. Richard Sterling’s third-floor office bore a polished brass plaque bearing his name and medical credentials. Without knocking, Miller twisted the brass handle and pushed the door open, stepping into a spacious room lined with leather-bound medical journals, expensive artwork, and a massive mahogany desk overlooking the city skyline. Dr. Richard Sterling, a distinguished-looking man in his late fifties with silver hair and an impeccably tailored suit, looked up from his computer monitor with a look of haughty annoyance that quickly melted into cold calculation.

""Officers,"" Sterling said smoothly, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. ""You are trespassing in a private corporate office without an appointment or a formal warrant signed by a superior judge. I demand you leave this room immediately, or I will have my legal team file a harassment suit against the department.""

Miller stepped fully into the office, his presence imposing and immovable. He pulled the folded emergency custody order and the search warrant from his tactical pocket and dropped them onto the center of Sterling's immaculate desk. ""You can talk to your legal team all you want, Dr. Sterling, but right now you're going to answer a few questions about your daughter’s maternity records.""

Sterling didn't touch the papers. He kept his hands resting on the edge of the mahogany desk, his posture rigid. ""My daughter's medical history is confidential under federal privacy laws. Whatever administrative oversight you think you've uncovered is a clerical error.""

""A clerical error that resulted in a living infant being tossed into a freezing dumpster behind Fourth Street during a blizzard?"" Miller's voice was low, dangerous, and laced with suppressed fury. ""We recovered the baby, Doctor. And we recovered the cashmere fabric from your designer coat left at the scene.""

Color drained slightly from Sterling’s cheeks, though his expression remained stubbornly frozen. ""I have no idea what you are talking about. My coats are purchased by the dozen. Anyone could have a similar garment.""

""The DNA from the pink blanket matches your family lineage, Dr. Sterling,"" Detective Vance interjected, stepping into the room and closing the heavy door behind her. ""We have the lab results right here. Your daughter gave birth to a healthy baby girl three nights ago, and someone in this family decided that an unwed pregnancy would ruin your medical practice's reputation in the community. So you threw her away like garbage.""

Sterling’s composure cracked for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting toward the window before returning to the officers. ""My family's reputation represents decades of service to this city. A scandal of that magnitude would destroy everything we've built. Elena made a tragic mistake, and the proper administrative steps were taken to ensure privacy for all parties involved.""

""Privacy?"" Miller shouted, the restraint finally snapping as he leaned across the desk, grabbing the lapel of Sterling's expensive suit and lifting him slightly off his feet. ""You call nearly letting a newborn freeze to death in a dumpster 'administrative steps'? That baby is a human being, not a clerical error!""

Vance placed a restraining hand on Miller's forearm. ""Tom, easy. Let the law handle him.""

Miller slowly lowered the doctor back down, smoothing his hand over his tactical vest to regain his composure. He stared into Sterling's terrified, defiant eyes. ""You're under arrest for reckless endangerment, falsification of medical records, and attempted child abandonment. Your medical license isn't going to save you from this.""
