Chapter 11: The Hospital Visit

The sterile corridors of the county hospital smelled of rubbing alcohol and bleached linoleum as Officer Miller and Leo walked side by side toward the pediatric intensive care unit. Leo wore a clean navy-blue sweater and dark jeans that Miller had bought for him earlier that morning, though he still kept his hands shoved deep into his pockets out of nervous habit. They paused outside Room 412, where a clear glass window looked in upon a row of quiet bassinets glowing softly under neonatal warmers.

Inside, the newborn baby—now officially designated in hospital records as Jane Doe pending family court placement—lay sleeping peacefully beneath a new pink blanket. Her tiny chest rose and fell in steady, rhythmic breaths, entirely unaware of the storm she had survived or the dramatic conspiracy uncovered to protect her.

A nurse in blue scrubs pushed the heavy glass door open, smiling warmly at the two visitors. ""Morning, Officer Miller. And you must be Leo. She's been sleeping like a little angel all morning.""

Leo stepped inside the room, his movements hesitant and reverent, as if approaching a sacred monument. He stood beside the clear plastic bassinet, looking down at the baby's tiny, flushed face. The angry red marks from the freezing cold had vanished entirely, replaced by healthy, soft skin. He reached out a trembling finger, gently touching the back of the baby's tiny hand. Instantly, the infant's reflex curled her miniature fingers around his index finger, holding on with surprising strength.

Leo’s breath caught in his throat. A tear spilled over his eyelid, trailing down his cheek, but this time his face wasn't twisted in pain; it was softened by an expression of pure, unadulterated wonder. ""She's holding onto me,"" he whispered, looking up at Miller with wide, shining eyes.

""She remembers who kept her warm in the dark, Leo,"" Miller said softly, placing a heavy, comforting hand on the boy's shoulder.

""Can we visit her every day until she finds a real home?"" Leo asked, refusing to let go of the baby's tiny hand.

""Every single day,"" Miller promised. ""In fact, I've been talking to the adoption board this morning. The state is accelerating her placement review given the criminal charges against the Sterling family. They need a certified foster-to-adopt home for her while the legal proceedings wrap up.""

Leo looked from the baby back to the veteran officer, the gears turning in his young mind with terrifying, hopeful clarity. ""Could she... could she stay with us? At your house?""

Miller looked down at the boy, feeling the final walls around his own guarded heart collapse entirely. He smiled, a deep, genuine smile that reached his eyes for the first time in years. ""I was hoping you'd ask that, Leo. We're going to file the paperwork together this afternoon.""
