Chapter 9

The private aviation terminal at O’Hare International Airport was quiet and discreet, far away from the chaotic main passenger hubs. Elena gripped Owen’s hand tightly as they hurried across the tarmac toward a sleek, twin-engine Gulfstream charter jet parked near the runway. A brisk autumn wind whipped Elena’s dark hair across her face, but she didn't care. In her bag rested two newly minted emergency passports and the court-stamped travel authorization signed by Judge Henderson just two hours prior.
Dr. Sarah Vance stood near the boarding stairs, waiting for them with an encouraging smile.
“You made it,” Dr. Sarah said with relief, hugging Elena tightly before turning to Owen. “Are you ready for a big adventure in Zurich, buddy?”
“My mom said the doctors there are going to help me walk better,” Owen said earnestly, clutching his crutches under his arms.
“They certainly are,” Dr. Sarah confirmed warmly. “The medical team at the Zurich Clinic is the best in the world. Everything is set up for your arrival.”
They climbed the short flight of stairs into the cabin of the jet. The interior was luxurious, featuring plush leather seating and polished wood accents, but to Elena, it felt like the safest place on earth. As she strapped Owen securely into a window seat and fastened her own seatbelt, a profound wave of exhaustion and liberation washed over her. She had defied Julian Vance. She had broken the chains of psychological and financial control that had bound her for a decade.
Through the reinforced cabin window, Elena watched the tarmac below. Suddenly, a black luxury SUV tore through the security perimeter gates, ignoring frantic waves from airport security guards. The vehicle skidded to a halt fifty yards from their parked jet.
The rear door swung open, and Julian Vance stepped out onto the asphalt.
Even from a distance, Elena could see the raw, unadulterated fury radiating from his rigid posture. His face was pale with rage, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were stark white. He took several rapid strides toward the jet, his prosthetic leg clicking against the concrete with mechanical urgency, shouting something that was completely drowned out by the rising shriek of the twin jet engines spooling up for takeoff.
Owen pressed his face against the cabin glass, looking down at his father in fright. “Mom, look. It’s Dad.”
Elena reached out, wrapping her warm, steady hand over Owen’s small fingers, blocking his view of the man below. She turned Owen’s face toward her, offering him a serene, confident smile.
“Look at me, sweetie,” Elena said softly, her voice steady and resolute. “We’re safe now. Look forward.”
Julian reached the base of the boarding stairs just as the hydraulic cabin door hissed shut and locked automatically from the inside. He slammed his fists against the reinforced metal door, screaming curses into the thin air, but his voice was swallowed entirely by the deafening roar of the jet engines.

With a gentle shudder, the Gulfstream taxied away from the terminal, pivoting smoothly toward the active runway. Through the cabin window, Elena watched Julian grow smaller and smaller until he was nothing more than a lone, pathetic silhouette standing on the vast expanse of concrete, completely powerless for the first time in his life.
