Chapter 10

The twelve-hour transatlantic flight passed in a blur of quiet relief and cautious optimism. Owen slept peacefully for most of the journey, resting his head comfortably in Elena’s lap, while Elena reviewed the Zurich Clinic’s detailed surgical roadmap provided by Dr. Sarah. Every page confirmed what Julian had desperately tried to hide: Owen’s condition was fully correctable, provided the specialized osteotomy and lengthening procedures were performed before his growth plates fully closed.
When the Gulfstream touched down smoothly at Zurich Airport, the crisp, clean mountain air greeted them as they stepped off the private tarmac. A sleek Mercedes van provided by the clinic was waiting on the tarmac to transport them directly to the private pediatric wing nestled in the picturesque foothills overlooking the city.
Dr. Hans Weber, a world-renowned orthopedic surgeon with silver hair and kind, perceptive eyes, greeted them in the private recovery suite. He reviewed Owen’s updated diagnostic scans with meticulous care, his expression turning encouraging rather than clinical.
“Mrs. Vance, your son has remarkable bone density despite his muscular imbalances,” Dr. Weber said in accented, perfect English. “The surgical correction we have planned is intricate, but we have performed this exact procedure on dozens of pediatric patients with extraordinary long-term success. Within six months of intensive physical therapy following the operation, Owen will be able to walk unassisted.”
Tears of immense gratitude welled in Elena’s eyes. She reached out and squeezed Dr. Weber’s hand. “Thank you, Doctor. When can we begin?”
“We’ll run our final pre-op blood panels tomorrow morning, and surgery is scheduled for Thursday at 7:00 AM,” Dr. Weber replied professionally.
That evening, settled into the comfortable family suite overlooking the snow-dusted Alps, Elena sat beside Owen’s hospital bed, reading him his favorite storybook by the warm bedside lamp. For the first time in years, there was no shadow hanging over them, no tense anticipation of a cruel remark or sudden outburst.
Yet, Elena knew the battle was far from over. Back in Chicago, Julian Vance was undoubtedly mobilizing every resource at his disposal. Marcus Vance had already warned her via encrypted messaging that Julian had filed an emergency international injunction alleging parental kidnapping, trying to force their immediate extradition. However, Swiss medical jurisdiction and the ironclad documentation of child endangerment provided by Dr. Sarah gave their legal defense a robust shield.
Owen looked up from his book, his big brown eyes filled with an innocence that touched Elena’s soul.
“Mom, do you think Dad will ever come here?” Owen asked quietly, pulling the blanket up to his chin.
Elena stroked his dark curls, her expression softening into fierce maternal protection. “No, sweetie. Your father cannot come here. This is our safe place, and we are going to focus entirely on getting your legs strong so you can run, play, and live the life you deserve.”
Owen nodded sleepily, closing his eyes. “I want to run in the park like the other kids, Mom.”
May you like
“I know you will, my love,” Elena whispered, kissing his forehead as he drifted off to sleep.
