Chapter 4

Down on the main floor, Julian finally broke away from the group of senior partners, his face flushed with adrenaline and suppressed rage. He had spent the last twenty minutes smoothing over the social disruption caused by his mother’s malicious display, assuring everyone that his wife was simply unwell. When he scanned the ballroom and finally spotted Elena standing on the mezzanine deep in conversation with Arthur Pendelton, his heart skipped a beat.
Arthur was notoriously difficult to pin down. Julian had spent six months trying to secure a private five-minute audience with the elderly patriarch, yet here stood Elena, casually leaning against the railing, holding Arthur’s undivided, rapt attention.
Julian practically sprinted up the grand staircase, his black leather shoes clicking furiously against the marble steps. He pushed past a lingering couple on the landing and reached the mezzanine, his chest heaving slightly as he forced a wide, strained smile onto his face.
“Elena, darling,” Julian interjected, his voice dripping with forced marital affection as he stepped between his wife and the senior board member. “There you are. I told you that you needed to rest. Arthur, please forgive my wife; she’s clearly suffering from the shock of the evening’s little accident. Let me escort her down to the car.”
Arthur did not blink. He slowly turned his head to look at Julian, stripping away the younger man's carefully constructed veneer with a single, devastatingly cold stare. The warmth that usually accompanied Arthur’s public persona was entirely gone, replaced by the crushing weight of institutional authority.
“Take your hand off her, Julian,” Arthur commanded quietly. There was no room for negotiation in his tone.
Julian froze, his hand hovering awkwardly in the air. He blinked in genuine confusion, glancing between Arthur and Elena. “I… I beg your pardon, sir? I was just trying to—”
“You were trying to manage a liability,” Arthur interrupted, his voice cutting through the ambient noise of the party below. “And it appears your management skills are severely lacking. In fact, your administrative oversight is currently being called into question across multiple departments.”
Julian’s sharp jawline tightened until the muscle twitched visibly. A cold sweat broke out along his hairline, staining his pristine collar. He looked at Elena, sensing the invisible thread of betrayal, yet still entirely unaware of the absolute magnitude of what she had exposed. He assumed she had merely complained about his neglect or the wine incident.
“Elena,” Julian hissed through clenched teeth, his mask finally slipping as desperation bled into his tone. “What have you been telling him?”
May you like
Elena looked down at her husband with profound pity. The red stain on her white dress seemed to pulse under the lights, a permanent reminder of the violence they had inflicted upon her, and the greater violence she was about to return.
“I’ve only been telling him the truth, Julian,” Elena said softly. “The kind of truth you can’t buy your way out of with a glass of imported wine.”
