Chapter 5: The Deposition Room

The interrogation room at the downtown precinct smelled faintly of old coffee and bleach, a sterile environment far removed from the plush, velvet-draped dining room of the estate. Claire sat at the stainless-steel table, her posture straight, her white collared shirt now hidden beneath a dark wool coat she had grabbed on her way out. Across from her sat Detective Vance, a weary veteran with tired eyes and a thick notebook filled with handwritten notes. Vance had seen every variation of domestic corruption and corporate greed the city had to offer, but the calm precision of Claire’s testimony had clearly unsettled him.
"Let’s walk through the timeline one more time, Miss Vance," the detective said, tapping his pen against the metal table. "According to your uncle’s files and your own digital backups, your father systematically looted the family manufacturing firm over a period of twelve years, while simultaneously falsifying the compliance audits submitted to the state regulatory board." Claire nodded, her voice steady and rhythmic. "That is correct. He used shell companies registered in the Caymans to siphon capital away from the employee pension fund, reinvesting the proceeds into speculative real estate ventures that subsequently failed."
Vance leaned back, folding his arms. "And the physical altercation tonight? That wasn’t just a family argument gone wrong. The physician who stitched your temple classified it as assault with a deadly weapon." Claire touched the bandage just above her left eyebrow, feeling the sterile gauze beneath her fingertips. "It was the predictable reaction of a cornered man," she stated calmly. "Arthur has spent thirty years using physical intimidation and financial coercion to maintain compliance. When I informed him that the audits had been duplicated and sent to outside authorities, he lost control."
The door to the observation room clicked open, and Thomas stepped into the space, holding a fresh cup of black coffee for Claire. He placed it gently on the table before taking a seat beside her. "The federal marshals have secured the downtown offices," Thomas whispered, leaning in close. "Arthur’s legal team is trying to file for an injunction, but the judge refused to hear it after reviewing the initial financial disclosures. It’s over, Claire. He can’t buy his way out of this." Claire wrapped her cold hands around the paper cup, feeling the warmth seep into her skin.
She thought of Margaret, left alone in that cavernous, echoing manor with no servants, no liquid funds, and no one left to terrorize. It was a bleak fate, but one entirely of their own construction. For decades, Margaret had enabled Arthur’s tyranny, prioritizing social prestige over the safety and well-being of her children. Now, the grand illusion had dissolved into criminal indictments and police reports. "We aren't done yet, Thomas," Claire said softly, taking a slow sip of the bitter coffee. "The pension fund still needs to be restored. The employees who lost their livelihoods because of his greed deserve every penny back."

Detective Vance looked between the uncle and niece, a faint trace of respect softening his weary expression. "You've got a mountain of evidence, Miss Vance, but recovering liquidated assets from overseas accounts is going to take months of federal litigation." Claire met the detective’s gaze without blinking. "Let them try," she said, her voice carrying an unyielding resolve. "I have all the time in the world." She stood up, buttoning her coat, ready to face whatever came next. The shadows of the past had finally been dragged into the harsh fluorescent light, and there was no turning back.
