Chapter 13: Reflections in the Glass

As autumn arrived, painting the estate’s sprawling gardens in brilliant shades of copper, gold, and crimson, the foundation prepared for its most ambitious retrospective exhibition yet: a collection of masterworks focused on the theme of truth and illusion in classical art.
Elena was deep in the galleries late one evening, supervising the placement of a rare seventeenth-century oil painting under the careful calibration of the security and lighting technicians. The painting depicted a classical philosopher examining a cracked mirror, symbolizing the pursuit of reality behind human deception.
Marcus walked into the gallery, his tailored coat draped over his arm, his expression relaxed. He stopped a few feet away, admiring both the artwork and the quiet authority with which Elena directed the crew.
When the technicians finished and packed their equipment, stepping out into the hallway, Marcus walked over to join Elena in front of the canvas.
“It’s striking,” Marcus noted quietly, staring at the cracked mirror depicted in the painting. “It reminds me of that room upstairs—the blue walls, the checkered floor, the shattered crystal.”
Elena turned to look at him, a gentle smile touching her lips. “That room used to feel like a crime scene, Marcus. Now it just feels like history. We stripped away the illusion, cleaned up the broken pieces, and built something real in its place.”
“Do you ever wonder what happened to Mei?” Marcus asked, his tone neutral, carrying neither anger nor regret.
“Occasionally,” Elena admitted honestly. “I hope she found a way to start over—to realize that trying to live behind a fabricated facade is an exhausting trap. True security doesn't come from what you can hide from others; it comes from having nothing left to hide.”

Marcus nodded slowly, wrapping his arm gently around her waist and pulling her close. “You changed everything, Elena. You brought light into a house that was slowly suffocating under the weight of artificial expectations.”
“We changed each other,” Elena corrected softly, resting her head against his shoulder. The reflection of the gallery lights gleamed softly on the polished hardwood floor, casting warm, steady highlights across the room. There was no fear, no hesitation, and no shadows left in the corners of their world.
