Chapter 8

Monday morning at Sterling & Vance Capital felt like the epicenter of a financial earthquake. The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor was packed to capacity, filled with senior partners, legal counsel, and nervous minority shareholders who had caught wind of the overnight liquidity freeze. The air smelled of expensive espresso and suppressed panic.

At the head of the polished oak table sat Arthur Vance, tapping his cane rhythmically against the floor. To his right sat Mary, wearing a sharp charcoal-gray pantsuit that looked like armor. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a severe, flawless ponytail. There was no trace of the wedding dress, no hint of the emotional devastation from forty-eight hours prior. She was the picture of corporate execution.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open, and Ethan strode into the room. He looked impeccably tailored in a bespoke navy suit, though his jaw was clenched and his eyes darted nervously around the room. He had clearly just stepped off a private flight from Europe and raced straight to the office, unaware of the trap that had snapped shut while he was in the air.

"What is the meaning of this?" Ethan demanded, his voice echoing off the glass walls as he approached the table. "My executive access card has been deactivated, and the compliance department tells me my asset accounts have been frozen. Arthur, what kind of circus are you running here?"

Arthur didn't flinch. He simply gestured toward the empty seat opposite Mary. "Sit down, Ethan. We have a great deal of business to discuss before the market opens."

Ethan ignored the seat, slamming his palms onto the edge of the table and glaring directly at Mary. "You did this. You petty, vindictive—"

"Watch your tone, Ethan," Mary interrupted, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. She didn't raise her voice; she didn't need to. The quiet authority in her tone forced the entire room into absolute silence. She slid a thick manila folder across the polished wood toward him. "Before you embarrass yourself further with accusations of vindictiveness, I suggest you open page four of the forensic audit report."

Ethan stared at the folder, his chest heaving beneath his tailored suit jacket. Slowly, hesitatingly, he reached out and opened the cover. His eyes scanned the first few lines of the financial transfer logs—the offshore accounts, the unauthorized cryptocurrency hedges, the false invoicing tied directly to Chloe’s corporate ID.

All the color drained from his face in an instant. The confident, charismatic executive vanished, replaced by a man looking into the abyss of his own ruin.

"This... this is fabricated," Ethan stammered, though the tremor in his voice betrayed him completely. "An internal glitch. Someone hacked the system—"

"Jax hacked the system?" Mary asked, raising an eyebrow as she clicked a remote control on the table. The massive wall-mounted screen behind them flickered to life, displaying a high-definition video recording of Jax signing a sworn federal affidavit detailing Ethan's entire embezzlement scheme, complete with time-stamped audio transcripts.
