Chapter 11

The resonant echo of Officer Miller’s voice reverberated up the grand staircase, cutting through the cavernous silence of the Vance estate like a razor. Heavy, purposeful footsteps began ascending the marble stairs, accompanied by the distinct clatter of police radio static and tactical gear.
Derek spun away from Lily's bed, his dark eyes wild with sudden, suppressed panic. He glanced back at the little girl, who was clutching her cloth doll so tightly her small knuckles were entirely bloodless. For a split second, a dangerous calculation flickered across his face—a brief, dark impulse to lunge forward and tear the drive from her hands by force.
"Mr. Vance!" Officer Miller's voice boomed from the upper landing, echoing down the children's wing corridor. "Step away from the child and keep your hands where we can see them!"
Derek straightened up instantly, masking his fury behind a wall of cold, aristocratic arrogance. He turned toward the nursery door just as Miller and Officer Vance appeared in the frame, their badges catching the warm amber light of the hallway. Behind them stood two tactical officers, their hands resting lightly on their holstered sidearms.
"You are trespassing," Derek said, his voice steady and devoid of fear, projecting absolute legal defiance. "This is private property. Unless you have a signed, timestamped search warrant issued by a presiding judge, you are in direct violation of state civil statutes."
Officer Vance stepped forward, holding out a thick legal document with a bright red court seal stapled to the corner. "Judge Callahan’s signature was revoked thirty minutes ago by the appellate division, Mr. Vance, after we presented physical evidence recovered from the Southside industrial destruction facility. This is a federal-level warrant for the entire premises, signed by Judge Henderson."
Derek’s jaw tightened, the muscle ticking furiously beneath the fresh scratch on his jaw. He didn't look at the paper; he knew when a chess piece had been successfully maneuvered against him.
"Fine," Derek said, his voice dripping with venom. "Execute your warrant. But my attorneys will dismantle your department piece by piece before the end of the week."
As Derek stepped backward, allowing the officers to enter the nursery, Officer Miller’s tired eyes immediately locked onto Lily sitting huddled against the headboard of the white canopy bed. The veteran detective softened his expression, removing his cap as he walked slowly across the plush carpet toward the little girl.
"Hey there, Lily," Miller said gently, crouching down so he was at eye level with her. "You remember me from the funeral home, right? We're here to make sure you're safe. Nobody is going to hurt you anymore."
Lily slowly lowered her arms, her bright blue eyes scanning Miller’s face for any sign of deception. She looked past his shoulder, watching as Derek stood rigidly near the doorway, flanked by two armed tactical officers who blocked any escape route.

With trembling fingers, Lily held out the worn cloth doll toward the detective. "Mommy said... Mommy said to give this to the police."
Miller gently took the doll from her small hands, feeling the rigid, bulky outline stitched into its cotton-stuffed spine. He looked up at Officer Vance, giving a slow, definitive nod. "We got it."
