Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Salt and Rain

The screen door rattled against its wooden frame as Sarah pulled the girl across the threshold. Mud smeared across the polished floorboards, leaving streaks like dried ink. The girl’s arms remained locked around the bundle, her knuckles white and bloodless. Sarah reached for a wool throw blanket off the back of the sofa, draping it around the child’s soaked shoulders, but the small body inside did not stop shaking. Every breath rattled in the girl’s narrow chest, catching in her throat like a dry sob.

"Let me take him, sweetie," Sarah whispered, crouching down so their eyes aligned. "Just for a minute. Let me get you both dry."

The girl shook her head fiercely, pulling backward until her spine hit the wainscoting. Her wet hair clung in jagged ribbons across her forehead, water dripping from the tip of her nose onto the pale flannel wrapped around the infant. Up close, the baby looked impossibly fragile, cheeks flushed a feverish pink beneath the cold dampness. On the newborn’s tiny left wrist, a clear plastic hospital bracelet was fastened tight.

Sarah reached out, her thumb brushing against the plastic loop. She gently tilted the child's wrist to read the smeared printed ink. The letters were faint, half-dissolved by the relentless downpour outside, but the surname stood out sharp and undeniable. Sarah's breath stopped in her throat. The name on the band was the very one carved into the stone marker at the edge of her family’s overgrown orchard.

Before Sarah could speak, the little girl’s knees buckled under the sheer weight of exhaustion, her small hands loosening their desperate grip as the baby began to slip from her arms.
