Chapter 15: The Open Road Ahead

The silence in the mountain clearing was absolute, broken only by the heavy, ragged breathing of Jax and Cutter as they remained locked in the dirt. Slowly, Jax released his grip on the enforcer’s collar, standing up and brushing the dirt and pine needles from his jeans. He stepped protectively in front of Leo, keeping his body positioned between his son and the club president, his eyes locked onto Silas with defiant caution.

Silas walked slowly toward them, his heavy leather boots crunching against the gravel. He didn't look at Cutter, who scrambled hastily to his feet, dusting himself off with a humiliated expression and retreating a few paces. Instead, Silas stopped ten feet away from Jax and stared long and hard at the eight-year-old boy standing bravely behind his father.

Silas’s faded blue eyes swept over Leo’s pale face, the oversized jacket, and the small, trembling hand still clutching the faded photograph of a young Jax holding a newborn baby. A flicker of something ancient and deeply buried crossed the old man’s weathered features—a distant, painful memory of a life he had sacrificed decades ago for the sake of the club.

"You've got his eyes, kid," Silas rasped, his voice unexpectedly soft compared to the thunderous command he had issued moments before.

Leo didn't shrink away. He held his ground, lifting his chin just a fraction higher. "He's my dad," Leo said clearly, his voice carrying an unshakeable, profound conviction. "And he's not going back with you."

Cutter stepped forward angrily. "Boss, you can't just let him—"

Silas raised one weathered hand, cutting Cutter off instantly without even turning his head. The enforcer clamped his mouth shut, stepping back into sullen silence.

The club president lowered the shotgun, resting the butt against the dirt as he leaned on the barrel. He looked back up at Jax, whose jaw remained tight, ready to die right there on the ridge if it meant securing his son's future.

"Twenty years ago, Jax," Silas said quietly, his gaze fixed on the middle distance, "I made the exact same choice you did. I chose the road. I chose the patch. And I spent every single night of the last forty years wondering whose arms my son was crying in." Silas paused, finally meeting Jax’s dark, suspicious eyes. "A man who rides away from his blood is a coward. But a man who fights to reclaim it... that man has earned the right to lay down his burden."
